thats ok.. since I had to pull the engine for the rebuild, the alternator no longer works either..

I have two, 75amp and 160 amp. neither operate as expected or as previously tested and wired.

I have completely removed the vehicle wiring from the test, and still can't get anything..

stumped is a good word..

Sam,

Try a adjustable idler (spring loaded like a must would be nice) between the alt and crank with the idler against the back (smooth ) side of the belt.

It seems you would want to place the pulley closer to the crank from you sketch.

I haven't been able to find a spring loaded tensioner that has the right shape for this custom application. still looking..

on the location of the idler, have been thinking about that. Was going to try a belt without the AC to see what that does (more PS coverage, same WP coverage).

considering power steering pulley coverage, here is a pic of the mustang serp belt design, much like what I am doing

A/C on top, down to PS, around to crank.. PS has about 90 degrees coverage.

Ok, so I did this belt routing, and the PS pulley squeals at the extremes (locks), and, I was able to lock the PS pump, but the belt kept going.

this is groove on groove, new belt.

also, I was able to turn the belt by hand, almost regardless of how tight I made it.

so, the other two pulleys I had chromed are too slippery.. crud..
PS and crank pulleys..

Sam,

Can you etch the contact area of the pulleys and keep the purty outer parts?

no idea.. anyone got any guidance on etching serpentine pulley ribs?

note that something squealed BEFORE I got the pulleys chromed.. so this may be belt contact area as well.

How about very carefully media blasting the ribs with low pressure?

I am interested in how you solve this problem as I have a 460 to build later for my 56.

I am tracking your problems and solutions very closely.

I'm thinking that your tensioner should be spring loaded instead of fixed/adjustable position. I also don't think that the pulleys are too smooth (chrome)......there are millions of billet and chrome pulleys sold and used w/ no probs.

I found and ordered a non-chromed crank pulley, same size as I have. It arrived this week.. but I have been away on business since last Friday, and my wife tells me the new house, pre-holiday (with company) task list needs to be worked on before I can get out to the shop again. (boooo :-( )

I think I have found another PS pulley as well, or might try to blast the grooves on this one (after I run power for the compressor, etc.. tangled web of tasks)..

I am also looking for tensioner or idler alternatives. I have one of the mustang tensioners but haven't found a place to mount it yet that works.

so, slowly I will get time to get back in the shop..

well, followup..

the new crank pulley didn't help either.. (boo!)

so I went and got a another test belt to increase the crank pulley coverage like pictured..

and.... NO squeal.. so it is NOT the PS pulley at all (cause that wasn't changed)..

now to find another idler or some way to use a tensioner to do this

hmm. I will have to make a platform to mount the thing to as there in nothing down there..

I bet it's still the w/p pulley. With your new routing the w/p has a lot more wrap and the squeal went away but you seem to have missed the alt (I'm sure you know that). You may need to rethink the routing and add a design that has 2 belts. Without having a reverse rotation w/p it seems like a challenge to make this work. Infact maybe March has a 2 belt system for your engine.

Just had to say you have a great looking truck.

thanks...

this was just a test routing to see what happens

I didn't want a 2 belt system.

yes the W/P pulley coverage changed here too.. I am thinking about moving the W/P idler down to help increase the coverage as well..

I may do this first..

So much fun to do this all now!..

yes a reverse rotation W/P would solve a LOT of problems.. if only.

rumor has it that edelbrock makes one for their bracket system..
bur I haven't been able to find it.

also had thought of electric W/P to remove the need for all that..
but it also mucks up the rest of the mounting points I use..
