alright re bumpin here lol....

But generally what is the amount of lift when you start needing new drive shafts....

Im thinkin around 8" lift.... Shooting for a 44" tire...

So i will sit around 10" taller...

But back to the question...

New d.s. with 8" of lift. My guess is yes, but just want to make sure so i can figure the cost into the project.

Seems to me that when Ivanribic lifted his truck that he said he used the stock shafts. He had a mix of stuff that led to something like 13" over stock.

I would say lift it, check them and then replace if you have to.

Ah yea good ole ivan....

Well i kinda wanted to figure in the cost first....

Ill just count on new drive shafts, and if i dont need them, i got an extra 1k or so for the motor.

it's not so much that you may need new shafts, but that you need to get them to live at the angles they will be subjected too. . .

Ivan may have kept his stock shafts, but he also turned the knuckles on his Dana60 so he could point the pinion back up towards the transfer case. And on the rear he had a combination of a rather extreme shackle flip which rotated his pinion forward and up and dropped his carrier bearing which brought his joints back into a "harmonious collaboration"

The rear you may be able to just rotate the pinion up in however you can do it and have the u-joints live. On the front, make sure you have a double cardan at the transfer case and you might only have to worry about swapping the drive shaft/axle yoke to 1410 sized joints. You could also try clearancing the yoke if the angle isn't that much. . .

Just a few tidbit from someone who hasn't had enough coffee yet

alright folks...
Im starting to make some decisions here...
Still lookin for some input.
Shooting for 8" of lift here
Got a shackle flip for the rear, for about 4" of lift, suggestions on where to buy 6" lift springs?that will give me the 2" extra to ditch my factory lift blocks.

as for the front which axle was stronger? The 79 d60 or the 89 d60 or was there even a difference?

Im not looking for lots of flex, a nice ride would be nice though.

Once i figure the majority of the cost for the build, i will then share some details about the motor build.....

You can shackle flip and then move your actual spring hangers down 4 inches. Less explanation is more, check out the album

In stock form, the 80's axle is stronger. The 79 has necked down inner axle shafts which aren't much bigger than Dana44 shafts. Just something to keep in mind to buy when you start to rebuild the 79. Not only that, the 79 axle is in probably much worse condition overall than an 80's axle. Just more money when it's time to rebuild it.

Both axles can be built to be equally strong though.

Don't buy banana springs. And buy springs with lots of thin leaves and maybe radius the leading edges of the leaves so they don't dig into the one above it. . .you could also keep them oiled to reduce friction.

also if i were to buy a lift spring and take out some of the leafs will i lose some of the lift?

But in doing so the ride would be softer and i could get more lift correct?

i should have been following htis thread a little more closely. im currently building a truck just like yours, but in the f350 version, and i think i have some info that can help you.

first off is gears. do your self a favor and just get the 5.13's. right now, im turning 40's and it doesnt have as much pull as i would like. had i only went with 4.88's, i would have been kicking myself real hard. granted im running a stock 5.8l, but thats coming out soon and a 418 stroker is going in. 4lo in this truck is unbelievable. all i have in the rear is a new posi. open front.

second is tires/lift. unless youre gonna cut your fenders, i would suggest either lifting it a little higher, or going wth a smaller tire than a 44. i just brought home some 42" swampers today, and im honestly not exactly sure if theyre even going to fit in the front and be able to turn, let alone flex. heck, even the back looks close.

if you have anymore questions, lemme know and ill try my best to answer.

Yea ive been doing some figuring....

I will likely go with 5.38's if not the 5.13's

Also i will likely lift about 12-14"s....

Similar to tony's truck honestly....

as for the motor, it will likely be a 408w,

2 snails and a couple stages of giggly.

lol, i see the plans have changed.

good call on the gears and lift. will probably turn out better in the long run, esp. with 44"s in mind.

im real interested on how you did your zf5 swap. if you feel like talkin about it, PM me or something.

btw, whos tony?

Yea...

Did some figuring and realized that 8" wasnt gunna cut it, ive always wanted 44"s since i was a young pup... that was the biggest tire they had out, i know its not the biggest now, but its still what i want.

As for the zf it came stock in my truck and i love it!

What trans do you have?
