2006 F350 6.0 L Diesel Want Start

I have a 2006 F350 6.0 Liter Diesel dually that has gotten harder to start each day. Now today, I pulled into Best Buy parking lot and it wouldn't start for nothing. I reset the fuel pump, cleaned and reset the air cleaner and finally had to call the Ford Dealer for a roadside assistance tow.

It the problem of not starting turns out to be a power train problem then the 100,000 mile warranty will pay for everything. If not I guess I am on the hook for paying the bill.

Has anyone had the problem of the vehicle getting harder and harder to start and then suddenly it just wouldn't start?

Fuel filters and oil filters have been changed per the maintenance schedule.

How long has it been since you changed the fuel filter and do you buy your diesel from the same place?

Fuel filters and oil filters changed 2 months ago.

Only buy diesel from places I have bought from for 10 years or more and have had no problems.

Probably smart to post answers to the following questions:
MILEAGE?
Last oil change? (check oil now)
Taste on tip of your tongue oil from dipstick. (Sweet means a freeze)
Exhaust, noticeable color, if you remember?
Liquid on heads?
Overflow A freeze tank at or below line?
Any other info you think pertinent?

You probably just have one of your two batteries going bad. I just had my 07 into the dealer at 19K miles, and replaced under warranty, for exactly this scenario. Hope you didn't start oil-tasting yet....

As you are probably aware, there were a lot of problems with head bolts and heads with the 6.0's depending on mileage. Some guys should taste the oil. Other guys, should drain a little and take a big drink. One has to decide!

High pressure oil leaks will do that.

Melton, perhaps you can clarify one thing for us:

Is the truck cranking over just fine, but not starting,

***OR***

Did the cranking speed get gradually slower over time, causing harder and harder starting for you until today, and it just wouldn't crank for you?

Cranks Over Just Fine

It cranks over just fine. Batteries and starter work just fine.

Before it wouldn't start, I could start it, drive 10 minutes or 10 hours, park it, turn the key off, go back and try to start it and it would turn the engine over 3 or 5 times before it would start. Then over the last two weeks it took the engine turning over 5 or 6 times to start.

Once started the engine ran just fine, even idleing. Not missing, cutting out or anything like that. No water in fuel light coming on, no cluster panel lights staying on or anything.

It just wouldn't start. Also, I read on another forum that the injectors had an o-ring that could cause the injectors to loose pressure and thus keep the truck from running.

Anyway it is at the auto dealers waiting for a diagnosis.

Update on 2006 6.0 L not Starting

Dealer finally got the truck into the repair bay today. Initial testing showed some IC codes, he didn't tell me which ones, but the service manager said the HPOP showed to be ok. He said the injectors showed to be ok as well. Now they think it maybe electrical or a leak they never heard of before.

I saw on a like about an air test. Hook up the air hose to the pressure sensor hole, turn the air on, and listen with a scope.

Any other tests they can do? I don't trust them to know much about repairing diesels. They sell plenty of them and work on plenty of them but they only have 1 diesel mechanic for a large Ford dealership. Strange?

My dealership has only one mechanic for diesels and he said he services about 2 dozen SD. I choose to take it as a sign that they require so little service - 1 guy can do it all.

I work as a diesel tech at a ford dealer and I can tell you there is a lot of problems with 6.0. The big problem is that they suck to work on and most people can't handle it.

I guess it is recommended to purchase the extended warranty on the engine if a guy still can?

So many war stories about extended warranties. If you can pin FORD down and buy it from them, MAYBE! What if FORD goes belly up? Difficult times for most of us.
