Question 95 f250 Oil Pressure????

My 95 f250 351 oil pressure worries me. I read before in the forums that all the gauge does is show you have pressure no matter where the needle is. Mine goes to the red mark when key is turned on, engine off. When started the needle spans from just below the "N" to the "o" of "normal" . You guys think this is alright? I was thinking of a new sending unit or guage to start, but am worried about the oil pump itself. Cant think of a better place to get helpful info than this site. Thanks Bill

Hope to get my pics posted soon!!!!!

You can test the gauge by grounding the sender wire and turning the key to the run position. If the gauge goes to the same place as when the engine is running, it's either a weak ground or a bad gauge. If the gauge snaps to about 3/4 scale, there is either a bad connection at the pressure switch, a weak ground though the switch and engine block, or possibly a bad switch (corroded internals perhaps?). The only way to know for sure to find out the actual pressure is to install an aftermarket gauge either a mechanical pressure gauge or an electric gauge with a variable resistance sender.

the gauge in the dash is a glorified idiot light.

like stated already a mech. gauge is the only way to know for sure what pressure is.

Thanks guys, I've heard many times the gauge isn't that good. I have a extra mech gauge laying around I'll try just for piece of mind. Waited two years for the guy to sell me this truck, and dont want to smoke the motor. Truck has under 69k. LOVE this body style, my first truck was a 92 f150, couldn't afford the f250 then. Now I got what I wanted and just want to take care of it. Thanks again, Bill
