I had a backfire problem like that and it turned out to be a bad accelerator jet setting. This was on a '63 Olds after a larger carb was added.
When you suddenly open the carb's butterfly plates, there is a lag before the metering jets add fuel to the air stream. The accelerator jet(s) squirt some raw fuel into the air stream to compensate.
There should be some adjustment on the accelerator jet linkage that just might fix the problem. In any case when your engine backfires during a sudden acceleration, it it probably running too lean.
