This is my first newer truck that has the "push button" 4wd instead of manual lockers. Its a '05 F150; My question is: Is there any kind of preventative maintenance I could do to guarantee smooth operation throughout the winter. If there is something I could grease or spray, please let me know what and where. Thanks for any info.
about 1 time a month you need to get in the dirt and put it in 4x4. don't really need to drive around any, just let the t-case motor shift into 4x4 and back into 4x2
this will help that motor from freezing up later on in life
The reason I ask is because a couple guys I know with that setup on their rangers have had solenoid problems sticking; not going in/ and not coming out of 4wd. I was just wandering if the same setup applied for the 150's.
but have you seen or read anything to suggest that this works over a long period of time? Just curious to see if this came from anyone from Ford...
nope, they've always just wanted $300-400 to "fix" my problems when those motors went out. It hasn't happened in this truck, but it's the same basic design as the 92-96's
motor is roughly $300 brand new.
when the motor quits working, you can usually use a stopgag to make it last a bit longer. Take a big rubber hammer to it. That will knock the corrsion loose a little bit. The motor will work a little while, and then freeze back up. Eventually it will require replacement
I've replaced a few of them in the 92-96 body styles. I always just bought an entire T-case for about $100 from junkyards. once though, I had 1 shipped from New Jersey to Seattle once for under $100 (awesome deal).
