Question about straight up timing

I am installing my new timing gear set and want to put it straight up at 0 degrees. I am a little unsure of how to install it. The cam has a stud on it, and the crank has a slide on it, so each gear will only go on at one place on them. So my main question is, how are the slide and stud supposed to be aligned? I was thinking, they both should be pointing straight up? Is my logic correct?

If you bought a direct replacement part, it will only fit one way on both the cam and the crank.

The mark on the cam should point straight down, while the crank sprocket mark points straight up.

ONLY if you bought a multi-index crank sprocket, can you install at different positions.

If you get the multi-index (recommended), there are usually three positions you can place the crank sprocket. Advanced, straight up, and retarded. There are three corresponding marks on the sprocket for these three positions. The one you want is 'zero' for straight up applications. It takes turning the crank a little bit to get it to point straight up if you took off the factory sprocket.

Thumbs up

I guess I should have mentioned that I have a comp cams double roller chain and sprockets. But that answered my question. I Will install the cam gear at 0 degrees, and have the timing mark on the cam faced down, and the timing mark on the crank faced up.

Thank you

The 400 has been a two year project, and am just about ready to drop it in my 78 Bronco.

When in doubt, refer to your Haynes manual... Good reference to have.
