need some help
Hello everyone,
I am looking at possibly buying a 2003 ford excursion with the 6.0 in it with approximately 200,000 miles. What do I need to do to bullet proof it? How long will this engine last? It will be our primary family vehicle, and on occasion may tow a small trailer.
Thanks!

More detail about size of family, daily mileage, why such rig would be appropriate might help understand your needs. Otherwise, in all honesty, who would recommend a fourteen-year-old 6.0 with 200K as a primary family vehicle?
The other thing you don't want to hear is to pay a shop to "bullet proof" a 6.0 probably exceeds the value of the rig. Again, to help understand, what is their asking for it?

If your new to these trucks there's far more than you can learn in a day week or even month! They are great vehicles when properly maintained.
Here are a few threads with similar questions to yours:

We are a family of 7 and live in rural Wisconsin, so 4x4 is needed as well as enough room to haul monthly groceries, pellets, etc. We have had a couple of suburbans in the past, but they all had issues. We used to have a 03 eddie bauer excursion with the 6.0 that had approximately 205000 miles on it when it was totaled in a rollover accident. Asking price on the truck is $9980. All injectors have been replaced, all new tires, brakes, fuel filters, oil filters, etc.

So you've had a 6.0, and an '03 as well?
As noted, there's a ton of info on this site regarding that barrel of monkeys. Even so, I'm a fan...
Heads would be the big thing to start with, I would think, meaning are they in good shape and/or have they been replaced?
But then you have the turbo, EGR system, FICM, all that could weigh heavily on the value and reliability of the rig.
In my humble opinion, and not an opinion shared by all, my beloved 6.0 has been very worthwhile, but only because I got it for next to nothing, and could more easily justify the expense of pulling both heads (and replacing), ARP studs, EGR system ("bulletproof" or delete), HPOP replacement, etc. And that was on an 05 (with 220,000 at the time, some years ago), so turbo and other details were less of an issue than on some (most?) of the 03's.
I suppose start with watching the Oil and coolant temp spreads, once its warmed up, along with looking closely at the coolant itself, to get better odds of knowing whether or not those 03 heads are ok.
