01 Won't Rev Past 3,500.

I just recently bought second hand an 01' Ranger. When I rev it in neutral, it won't go past 3,500 rpm. It just rises and falls quickly. Somebody mentioned to me a rev limiter? Can I have that removed by any chance, if that is the problem? What do you folks recommend I do?

Thanks in advance,

Shane.

If it is an automatic, it is rev limited to about 3k rpm. Most Rangers are limited to about 6250 rpm top end. jd

on the automatic is the 3k revlimit only when in neutral or all the time? i have been working on an 01 ranger 4.0 that even in drive nailing it down the road will not go over 3.5k top end.

i know that the 3k limit is normal when in neutral but is it the same in drive?

You can have the rev limiter removed with a bama engine programer. My 04 4.0 ranger would rev up to 5,500 going up through the gears with a manual tranny. I don't know why you need to rev past 3 grand in neutral, but the bama will delete the rev limiter.

If you are cutting out at 3000+ rpm while driving the truck (in gear or in drive), and if there are no diagnostic codes set in the PCM, then replace the Cam Sensor and Cam Synchronizer.

You can purchase this brand new in the "Dorman" brand.. it is very high quality, and comes with the synchronizer, the sensor, AND the installation alignment tool. (And is about the same price as the remanufactured synchronizers that often aren't aligned quite right)

Sorry, just one quick question... Where do you pick up a Bama Engine Programmer? and how much do they go for? I'm completely in the dark as this is the first vehicle I've owned... Thanks again fellas.

Just click on bamachips tuning. The last time I checked, they were a round 390.00. They also improve shift point on an auto tranny and adjust speedo for larger tires or gear swaps.

Only in neutral. If it will not go higher than 3.5k, you have other problems, and a programmer will be of no help. A clogged exhuast system will exhibit this symptom among other things. jd

Since when was Dorman brand anything quality? Dorman knows how to make a nice looking product with the appearance of quality, but I have never had any luck with Dorman brand stuff.

Fry, is the problem that it wont go past ~3k in neutral, and you're afraid it wont on the road, either?

They have a limiter to keep from blowing up the engine in neutral, theres no reason to have an auto above 3k in neutral, anyway.

How does she drive?

And welcome to FTE!

Scott
