01 Won't Rev Past 3,500.
I just recently bought second hand an 01' Ranger. When I rev it in neutral, it won't go past 3,500 rpm. It just rises and falls quickly. Somebody mentioned to me a rev limiter? Can I have that removed by any chance, if that is the problem? What do you folks recommend I do?
Thanks in advance,
Shane.

You can have the rev limiter removed with a bama engine programer. My 04 4.0 ranger would rev up to 5,500 going up through the gears with a manual tranny. I don't know why you need to rev past 3 grand in neutral, but the bama will delete the rev limiter.

If you are cutting out at 3000+ rpm while driving the truck (in gear or in drive), and if there are no diagnostic codes set in the PCM, then replace the Cam Sensor and Cam Synchronizer.
You can purchase this brand new in the "Dorman" brand.. it is very high quality, and comes with the synchronizer, the sensor, AND the installation alignment tool. (And is about the same price as the remanufactured synchronizers that often aren't aligned quite right)

Only in neutral. If it will not go higher than 3.5k, you have other problems, and a programmer will be of no help. A clogged exhuast system will exhibit this symptom among other things. jd
