question for 7.3L owners!

hi guys i just had a quick question for ya, i have a 99 7.3L (couldnt find right forum im sure you have the answer tho) that i just purchased, it has 150k miles (immaculate condition) just because of the miles i am questioning the start up time.. I havent driven any 7.3L before , im wondering how long should the "ignition" last. by ignition i mean the time in between when i turn the key and when it fires up, it usually take about 2-3 seconds, im not sure if that is normal for diesels or not.. if not, what could it be ?

Do you get a lot of white smoke when it starts up?

I would say that 2-3 sec.s is fine, as long as there isnt smoke.
These trucks have to build up High pressure oil for the injectors, and that takes a second.
Smoke?
Run OK?

nope no white smoke, nothing abnormal , runs like a champ... was just wondering about the start time.. mylittle brother has a 2006 6.0L and he told me that the start time is perfectly normal, It really is a great truck ! Just was a little weary about the start time... Maybe its because of short driving trips? i start it and drive about 2 miles and turn it off. could that cause a problem? Or am i just a new truck owner who is tripping out

There was something i remember about HPOP drain off, but it's kind of normal. it wont do it when it's new, but it's ok as i understand. mine takes similar time, and will actually take longer when warm. something about warmer oil draining easier.
I'd say your fine!.
There is a 99-03 forum, but the 7.3 isnt much different between the two of us.

The forum thing is wierd!
No one here would mind you though.
I just saw your picture of your truck, Where do you hide the stepladder?
Do you act as a rain shield for hondas?homeless?
man that's a huge lift.

Haha actually i draft behind semi's when on the freeway, im actually getting about 20mpg that way so it works for me. I actually have automatic steps that drop about 8 inches when i open a door. Funny story tho, today i was washing the truck and i couldnt find my step ladder, i needed to get in the bed so i dropped the tail gate and then dropped the step (same step from the 08's) i stepped up and i fell off right onto my back... that was one of those "o god why did i go so big" moments... it deffinately has its pros and cons.. probably more cons.. but one of the pros is.. celeb. status... thats a big plus =-P

You might want to ditch the K@N filter they flow the most air but the trade off is more dirt goes along with it. Ther is a custom setup a lot of people do but I dont know much about it try looking up 6637 thats the filter people use. I am sure other will jump in to help you out.

even drafting behind semi's (isnt that illegal?) i find that real hard to swallow with those XZL's weighing in at close to 300lbs a piece minus the wheel!

i have the 6637 mod and it was one of the easiest/cheapest mods to date. just get ya a 45* 3" pvc elbow and it will slip right on

My starter was the cause of slower starts over the last 4 months. It finally just went out. I thought the batteries were gone at first. Nice truck by the way.

One of my dads work trucks, 02 F-350 w/7.3, has almost the same amount of miles and it takes just about the same amount of time to start and it still runs like a champ. I would say that it is fine.

Thats a good point-
So let's clarify what i said earlier. if it's cranking over fast, and takes two or three seconds, you're fine. slowing down? might have his problem, or battery issues.
