There is a small fan running under the hood when the truck is off. Is this normal?

Hi, I have an 87 f150 just got it running still not to familiar with it yet. When I turn the truck off there is a small fan conected with a duct to the manifold. It runs when the truck is off, is this normal. I have disconected the negative battery cable so I dont kill the battery. Any help would be good. Thanks, Joe

Which engine do you have, the 4.9 liter six cylinder? My 1988 F-150 with that engine has this, my fan only comes on once in a while when I shut the engine off. Your fan should shut off by itself in a while.

I'd like to see a pic if you can post one, I'm not really sure what it could be.

The fan is designed to cool off the injectors.I had the same truck you own.My fan would only run in extremly hot weather, and then only for a few minutes after shut down.If yours is running continuosly, you could have a bad sensor or fan relay.

I also had a 1987 F150 with the six, it had that fan. The fan itself lasts a long time, but they are a little hard to get when needing replacement. That truck went just over 300,000 miles before I sold it. I only replaced the fan once.

I have a 91 and I have no fan or any evidence of it either, special warm weather option - or did they change something?
I'm curious about my 6 now...

I have an 89 EFI F150 with an I6 and it also has the fan. It only runs for a while after you turn the truck off.

I wonder if it was a campaign for engines that went into heat soak while still under warranty? (Chrysler calls it a campaign, Ford might call it something different) That would explain why not many engines have it.

Yeah--because the injectors are so close to the exhaust manifolds in this non-crossflow inline six.

Yes, but only a small percentage, even in warmer climates.
