I tried that already twice. This time I lost 3rd and 4th gears with less than 8,000 miles on it. I want the lock-up converter in 3rd and OD, as well as the better internals and electronic control. All the tranny people I've talked to think this is a better deal. I have been through 7 AODs including an Art Carr and the AODominator, both had the AODE/R470W wide ratio gear set and it's not enough. My opinion, There is no good AOD for a truck.

I think part of it is just bad luck, but I'm looking for as close to bullet-proof as I can get. I spend time out in the middle of nowhere in the desert and don't want to have any more problems.

I would say that if you add a trans.oil cooler, remember to take it out of OD when towing or going up long grades, and change the fluid every 25,000 miles, you should be OK.

The AOD converter is actually locked full-time in 3 rd and 4th gear, only it does it mechanically - the AOD has two input shafts, the outer one is driven off the converter turbine, but the inner one is driven off the converter housing, so in 3rd and 4th the AOD entirely bypasses the converter turbine and takes power directly from the engine crank (through the flexplate and the converter housing, but still, there's no slip whatsoever). Which is why when an AOD with a shift kit goes into OD under light throttle it shakes the whole vehicle, it's essentially the same as dumping the clutch upon upshifting a bolt-action trans. Also, when it comes to AODs, it's best to have one built by a local builder who has done many of them and knows them like the back of his hand - the AOD is nothing like a C6 or a TH350 when it comes to (re)building, you really need to know what you're doing when upgrading one for high power - sadly, most big big transmission places don't seem to pay much attention to their builds, resulting in what you experienced with your old AODs. What has me concerned is that you mentioned the 4R70W ou just put in is used, does that mean it's a factory trans? Cause those ain't that much stronger than a factory AOD, and no way it's tronger than a properly built AOD, especially a race-built wide-ratio AOD... So keep that in mind, just so you don't get an unpleasant surprise when you're out in the desert.

Been working on my rattler for a few days already:

First yesterday I added a big power cable from the passenger-side battery directly to the glowplugs relay, my truck now glows for a few seconds shorter and it also enters an afterglow cycle which it never did before - means the GPs are getting more power delivered to them now, should make for easier winter starts.

Then just now I got done upgrading my headlights - I now have a relay for the low beams and another for the high beams, with wires about twice thicker than what the factory put in there. I also converted my low beams to daytime running lights and now my high beams serve as low beams - my truck rides very high in the rear and the headlights adjusters are frozen, so the high beams shine exactly where the lows should be, and lows are borderline useless so I figured the DRL is a nice upgrade from a safety stand point.

At some time in between those two jobs the bed cap was sealed with silicone where it was leaking at the bed rails, and it also got sprayed with a new coat of shiny black.

Overall I'm almost ready for the evil cold that's about to hit us soon, only thing left on the list is the front fuel tank cause it's dripping when over 1/2 full...

I just upgraded my lighting. I replaced my little fog lights with a pair of Hella XL 550 auxiliary headlights. They are almost the exact same size as the openings in the bumper. For those that are interesting they are basically the same thing has the Hella Comet 550.

Loaded it full of firewood till it couldn't hold any more, dropped that load off at home, drove back and loaded the truck AND half a 12' trailer full of firewood and drug that home and unloaded it. Ol' blue did pretty good - but the second trip with the trailer was about all she wanted pulling up some big hills

I'm now sitting on the couch reflecting how out of shape I must be to be this sore from cutting and loading/unloading 2 1/2 loads of wood....
