Code Help - Any ideas??

1994 Ranger 2.3L 5spd 2whd no cruise

Okay, I did a KOEO test, got the code for an ECT error, replaced that today. Run another KOEO test, got code 111, I read somewhere that indicates system pass.

So I think, wow great. Start the truck, she is idling great, no CEL (first time in a while). I let it warm up, about 10 minutes, no issue, then it goes back into the wonderful issue that started all this, it sounds like a damn locomotive, and starts chugging, it sounds like either the timing goes nutso, or half the cylinders shut off.

I do a KOER test, since another KOEO test shows 111 again, even when the CEL had come on while running.

So the KOER test gives me 2 codes, 998 first, then 224. Anyone have any clue where I should look next, I am not familiar with these codes.

Its a brand new ECM, the old one wouldnt even throw codes.

Welcome to FTE UMDSmith,

Have you been at ken00's tech site here at FTE?
I think it's OBD-II?
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...formation.html
FYI: Ya' know I was just over at that link and didn't see your codes...wish I had!
If I find then I'll let you know!

I havent found ranger specific, but I did find this
Troublcodes.net Trouble Codes OBD & OBD2 Trouble Codes and Technical info & Tool Store. By BAT Auto Technical

224 could be
PCM Detected Coil 1,2,3 Or 4 Primary Circuit Failure (EI)
or
Erratic Ignition Diagnostic Module Input To Processor

and 998 is Hard Fault, whatever the heck that means

Hi UMDSmith,

Thank you for you response and I see you know how to surf for info too.
Sometimes times can't win em' all.

And I found "hard fault" to be a short somewhere in the system. I'm still looking for mine and it's been nearly 2 weeks of trial and error. FYI: I also had a partial coil failure but no code came up for it.

Hah yeah, computers and the net are my specialty. I posted my help about 35 seconds after it started running like a turd again. After 10 minutes of patting myself on the back thinking it was fixed.

I'm really a bit lost now, as I am not sure where to even start looking.

UMDSmith,

Not to drive you into a tizzy but this is what I've been going through trying to come to a resolve with megga help from pawpaw:

I'm wondering if I shouldn't just replace the o2's since they are probably melted. When my truck goes into crazy mode as I call it, its also dumping a crapload of fuel down the exhaust, which has ignited in the cat and made it glow RED hot.

I really don't like throwing parts at a problem. I just want to fix this damn truck and sell it. I bought a 74 f100 so I never have to deal with a computer or all these terrible ford sensors again. Of course I need to learn how to tune a carb before that one is ready to go.

Thank god for my 89 mustang!! Even though its throwing codes as well.

Hi again UMDSmith,

That '94 has a carb? Looks like you'll be taking a course in rebuilding them anyway for your '74.

Oh heck no, the 94 is your standard ford efi.

74 is my first truck with a carb. Im trying to get away from anything non
mechanical.

I think my 94 is the same setup as your truck engine wise, 2.3L I4, 2 plugs per cylinder, 5 spd, no cruise control

After reading what crazypaw wrote about the ECT switching to an o2 sensor reading to determine timing after the truck warms up, that may mean that my o2 sensor is fried. Of course, it really would throw a code for that during the KOEO test.

224 is the code that Im leaning towards now, but I'm not really sure what those mean or how to fix it.

I had the or a friend had the problem with his 3.0 and it ended up being a temp sensor.

A code 998 hard fault. I am familiar with that. A lot of things can cause it. What it means is that something very serious is wrong, and in an effort to protect the engine and the ECU from further damage, it is running exclusively off the fuel tables. A hard fault is set when critical system components are not working, namely the TPS, both MAF and O2 sensors simultaneously, internal PCM failures, or ignition circuit failures. Since you have a code for the ignition circuit I would pursue that. The ignition module is that the top of the list. You can have the module tested at many parts stores.

WHEW! You threw me for a loop when you made this statement.
So you've had this happen more than once? interesting?

I'm still learning about the rangers motor setup.

Can anyone point me to a page or article that shows how to remove the ignition coil. I assume its those blocks underneath where the spark plugs attach.

The code 224 ( assuming you meanP0224) is for intermittent TPS. So have a look at the Trottle Position Sensor, it's electrical connector, it's pins & sockets & electrical wiring to it & get that put right.

Then reset the computer & do another KOER scan & see how things are doing.

So while your doing that & seeing as how it's been running rich enough to cause the cat converter to overheat to the point of glowing red hot, I'd check for excesive fuel pressure, then do a vacuum gauge test for a blocked cat coverter, because getting that hot from excesive fuel being dumped into it, sure won't do it any good & may have caused it's matrix to have suffered a melt down & thus excessive exhaust back pressure.

Let us know what you find.
