I own a 1997 F150 4x2 with 69,000 miles on it. I live in Western NY and noticed that the paint on the roof is bubbling up, splitting and rusting underneath (in about 25-30 places) I called Ford and they said that because my warrenty (milage and time) is finished, they will not help me with this problem. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, please answer and maybe we could get something done about this.

 

Is it all over the roof or only in the rain rails? The rain rails are the 2 grooves in the roof.

This is a common problem with all the manufacturers. It has been going on for some time. I had problems with a 86 F-250 doing this. Back then, they'd paint the truck for free, but no more. Take it to a body shop and have them strip the entire roof and prime and re-paint it. The crap in the air these days has alot to do with it. The paint is so thin now with the clear coats they use, a little color and lots of clear. The UV rays break down the paints and the bonding agents that hold the paint on.

 

I had the same thing with less mileage. It looked liked little slits all over the hood and the roof. Ford helped out all though the warranty ran out on time, I ended up paying $250.00. Mine is also a "97" F150. Now check your doors for cracks!

 

I also have a '97 F150 with 70,000 mi. and just recently noticed the same problem. The paint is starting to peel off in the rain rails. My main concern, though, is the doors cracking. I'm still trying to get that taken care of.
