How much HP would that turbo help produce?

I don't see the point of the rear mount turbochargers. Isn't the air filter going to get dirty as hell mounted back there? I don't really see what benefit it has over a traditional turbo.

They keep the engine compartment cleaner, probably easier to hook up as well, and I suppose since the tubing length is so long, an intercooler is needed as much, but spool times will be longer the long the exhaust gas has to travel

Had a tacoma once upon a time!(fun little truck!) And was really considering the sts. They're shop was only a half hour away and I went down for a test drive. All I got to say is WOW! With everyone bagging on the "LAG" factor I wasn't expecting much. But to my surprise there wasn't hardly any lag! Almost unnoticable. Can't wait to see where the ford goes with it.

Yeah on one of these powerblock show a while back, they put a STS remote turbo kit on a corvette. The 2 turbos were all the way back by the exhaust tips..and it didnt have hardely any lag.
This will be interesting to see which truck will come out on top..

Well, I wish they would have left the L NA as well. I'd like to see them do the same mods to each to see how well they respond, then continue from there to do what most people do .

I think it'd be more interesting to see the same mods on each than boosting power to the L through a turbo. JMO though.

I am kinda of surprised they didn't do a different cam in it, or at least rebuild or go through the engine like they did on the 454.

If they did the same mods to each of them the L wouldn't have a prayer. The extra 100 cubic inches would be way too much to overcome in a straight line. On a road track it would probably be a different story though.

I wonder which truck would be faster.... an early '90's Lightning or early '90's 454 SS if you put $ 5000 worth of similar performance parts into both the 454 and the Lightning's engine?

When a truck is about 15-17 year old or so, chances are, that the engine would need a bit of 'freshening' . If the body and other mechanics are good...why not spend $ 5 Grand of performance parts during a rebuild.

I'm also wondering if it would make more sense, power wise, to put a hopped up 460 in an older Lightning, rather than rebuilding the small block that the Lightning came with.

You could probably find a 460 in rebuildable condition, from a salvage yard, for a reasonable cost, probably the Lightning's suspension, cooling would be able to hold up under the added power of the 460, not sure about the trannie.

I think the E4OD was used behind the 460, so that wouldn't be a problem, but it might throw the weight balance off a little bit.

I think you're right about the weight balance, but to my mind, a pickup is never going to be a great handler like a sports car, Just too high a CG and also the weight distribution in all of them is concentrated at the front.

I note that you have a '94 F150 4 X 4, 351, etc. A number of years ago, I could of got a great deal on a used, lo mile, '94 or '95 (can't remember) F250, extended cab, with cap, 4 X 4, 351. Didn't get it, always had a bit of regret.

Well building up a SB is alot cheaper than building up a BB these days and can get as much power out of SB. One reason ford put in a 351 because it was lighter and got the job done anyway. If i had a choice of putting an new engine in it would be a 351 stroked out to a 396 or 427. If you would to put $500 into each one that would be a tough one to call i think.
