I would like to hear what works and does not work when building a 460 for torque. The engine will go into a F150 4X4 and replace a 400m.

What builds torque in a 460 works in all engines...just thing SMALL. Keep the carb venturis small, no bigger than a 650 Holley. Keep the cam small...probably no more than 212-218 degrees duration at .050, check with Crane or Competition Eng. for the correct cam...they make what you need for towing/torque. Keep the header tubes small, somewhere around 1 and 7/8" diameter for the big block. The intake manifold needs to be a "dual plane" street type manifold...I've used a number of styles over the years and prefer the "Offenhauser 360". Have fun. Deen

I just finished my 460 for my 86 Bronco. I built the whole thing myself (short of the machine work, boring and decking), and heres what I used.
For the cam I used the Summit cam with the most conservative grind (they only have 2 for the 460), Keith Black (I think) pistons that give 9:1 Compression, but with the block and the head decked it's probalble around 9.2-9.4:1. Heddman headers into one pipe (I had dual for a while, but the torque is better with one 2 1/4 inch pipe through the stock muffler. Stock rods, crank and heads. I used an edelbrock performer intake with a 600 CFM Holly vacume secondary 4-barrel (according to the calulations I did the 600 CFM is good to around 4500 RPM). If I had to do it all over, summit offers a 460 stroker crank that they clame to be good for 540 inches. It cost around 700$, and you need Ch*vy rods and special pistons, but you can pick up a set of rods from a junkyard, and one way or another you need a new set of pistons if your gonna rebuild your engine. I also use a TCI RV torque converter in a C6 I built with a shift kit. When I put it in four wheel low, the brakes have a real hard time keeping the truck still, I would guess I'm putting out around 450 ftlbs of torque by 1200 RPM, but I don't know for sure. I do know the truck really flys now. I haven't talken it off road yet, as I haven't put the front driveshaft back in, but I'm willing to bet there won't be a lot I can't tackle. Good luck

if you want it for racing you need a big cam with little duration.i race a 79 f150 mud truck with full factory body. single plane offenhouser port o sonic intake.i have a solid roller cam .748 lift with 296 300 duration. excellant torque for heavy vehicle.totes the wheels on my 4x4 for about 25 feet off the starting line......but i leave the line at around 4700rpm.cam runs out at 6800rpms have 17/8 in. headders 750 vacuum sec. flowed to 935 cfm.have 15 to 1 comp. alum. rods.5000 stall rrecomended.awsome torque.if you need any more info email me.thanks calvn love my ford truck!!!!!)

My dad and I just built a similar engine from an article in Super Ford, that way we'd know what power it had. They dyno'd theirs at 430hp, 530 ft. lbs. Here's the parts list, exactly. 750cfm vacuum secondary Holley, Edelbrock Performer intake, Crane Max Velocity cam with 272/284 duration and .513/.518in. lift on the intake and exhaust, 9.5:1 compression with DOVE heads ('68-'70 heads), mild exhauset porting to get rid of thermactor hump, 1 7/8 headers with 2.5in pipes. Can't get much cheaper and it's a great grunt motor with a bit of oats up in the rpm range.

I just rebuilt my 77 460. I'ts bored 40 over with moly rings. I used a pretty mild rv cam ( to comply with CA smog ),stock intake and carb(rebuilt),stock exhaust manifolds with the two pipes running into the muffler with one tail pipe out ,eletronic ignition and was very impressed with low end and overall performance.

I just built a 460 for a car motor, but I did build it for performance. The motor I got, was pre' 73 and had closed chamber heads. I put a Comp. Cam in it with a set of Keith Black Hypereutectic pistons. I used a Edelbrock Performer intake and a Holley 750 single pumper vacuum secondaries. With the style heads I have and parts on it, it has been estimated (by several dirt track drivers and stock car builders) that it produces around 475+ horse and 550+ Ft. Lbs. of Torque.

I just bought a 1977 F-150 2wd with a 460. Everything is stock except possibly the exhaust. (Dual, no converters). I've been told Horsepower is around 230-240 stock. What is the easiest thing I can do to wake this motor up. It only has 44,000 miles on it.

Thanks,
EJ
