question on cams and cam timing

i just was thinking, say you got a timing set with the three keyways for advancing, straight up, and retarded. Would running a large cam with the cam timing sdvanced produce more low end and high end, or just make the the motor run like it has a smaller cam in it? what about vice versa with a really small cam and retared cam timing? sometimes i come up with some weird stuff

question on cams and cam timing

Advancing your cam 4 degrees gives you a little more bottom end... but advancing/retarding is only a "fine tuning" method of setting up your cam. Advancing the cam 4 degrees will bring the H.P./Torque curve down about 400-500 RPM but only nets you maybe an additional 8-12 ft. lbs. torque. Retarding the cam 4 degrees moves you up 400-500 RPM but will only net you maybe 10-15 HP. In other words don't "guess" what cam you need to start with, call two or three cam MFGs. and get their recommendations...your bad cam choice can not be made up by advancing/retarding 2-4 degrees.

question on cams and cam timing

Well put Deen.
Its a balancing act.
When you call the Cam Pros. tell them exactly what you have in the engine. Heads - Pistons - Intake - Exhaust - etc.
And what type of majority driving you will be doing.

P.S. more cam doesn't equal more romance.

question on cams and cam timing

what i was trying to say was would it give me a broader power band if i went with a slightly larger cam than i would have with the timing straight up, and advanced it a tade, would it not be enough to notice? Sometimes i think i think too much
