Thumbs up Drove A Buddy's 2008 Ram 2500 Cummins---wow!!!

He just bought that sucker, and it only has 2500 miles on it. I never thought I'd have a good word to say about Dodge after that 2001 Dodge 1500 disaster I owned a couple of years ago, but WOW!!!

(note: The tranny on the 2001 busted at 47000 miles.....The paint job started to crack and fade at about the same time, poor customer service and service department).

I LOVE the cummins engine. You can barely hear that sucker, and what you CAN hear is just a good, slow, solid 'thumping'. Even when I kicked it a little (and put the windows down), the noise level was fairly low. The acceleration was smooth and superb, and I found myself speeding when I got onto the interstate, and I barely had the pedal down. I love the power curve of the Cummins. Had it cruising at 70 on I485, and she held a steady 1800 rpm.

The Jake-Brake ROCKS! I especially love it when I got off of the interstate and kicked out of cruise control and didn't even have to use the brakes---the Jake-Brake took care of it, and I loved the gentle 'roar' of the Jakes when she slowed the truck down.

The ride was fairly stiff, but I actually like this because it feels like my 2000 psd, and I like a heavy duty truck to FEEL like a heavy duty truck, know what I mean?

The 6-spd tranny accelerated smoothly, and you could barely hear the gears changing. I kicked it a little (about a 3000 to 3200 rpm acceleration) from 0 to 55 when I got onto Steele Creek Rd from the interstate. The engine stayed fairly quiet and the acceleration was smooth, and it was QUICK! No smoke, of course.

Rumor: Is it true that Dodge is dropping the cummins in 2010 and going to a mercedes diesel?

Rumor: Is it true that Ford is dropping International and going to the cummins at that time?

Anyway, great ride. My buddy's lie-o-meter had a lifetime of over 20mpg showing (take that for what it's worth), but he's made a couple of trips to Savannah and swears up and down he manually recorded 24mpg numbers. Take THAT for what it's worth.

The first thing I noticed on the Dodge was how quiet it is - and you won't hear a complaint from too many people about the Cummins. The only thing the jury is out on (to me , anyway) is the trans.

I still like the looks of the Ford much better.

I still think the cummins is the best diesel in a pickup. I'm suer people are going to chime in about Dodge trannies sucking, but the new 6 speed is supposed to be good. It is made by asin(sp?) same people who make Toyota transmissions

Don't know, but they would be a fools if they did...

False, Ford is going with an in-house diesel.

Because it's nice be be able to have a conversation with someone in the cab, or be able to hear the music without blasting it...

The cummins contract runs till 2012, and I don't think dodge will be leaving cummins anytime soon as they are coming out will a small V8 cummins for the 1500 in 2009.

While the 08 PSD may have quiet diesel tech, the Cummins is still quieter, almost soundsl ike a slow moving sewing machine.

I almost brought up the 'quietness' of the Duramax.....But that would have been a little too much a little too soon......

Seriously, thanks for keeping the 'rudeness' down in this thread.

And this is NOT meant to be a comparison to the 2008 psd.....I've not driven one and only know a little about them based on the 2008 6.4L threads. I've only got my own 2000 psd to use as comparison, and of course the 6.7L cummins is in a different league from the 7.3L powerstroke.

Still and all, my buddy has a nice truck. He's got the 4-dr, but NOT the megacab. He said the turning radius of that sucker (megacab) is about like a navy destroyer.

I wonder if Dodge got their wretched paint jobs squared away, and how's the service/maintenance at Dodge nowadays.

Ford has Cummins in the F-650 and up as an option in 08? I guess a F-650 is not a pick up any more

i do like those new dodges. there is someone around town that has a dark grey 4 door with a diesel and appears slightly lifted with some 33" tires and aftermarket rims on it. very nice truck. i like it a lot better looks wise than the 2008 fords. but have not seen the interior of them to compare.

My brother has an '01 Cummins that's chipped, and that thing runs like a scalded dog.

Of course, that's also the only chipped diesel I've ever rode in...

I'm good friends with the local towing company, they picked up a new 4500 or maybe 5500 stripped chassis for a flat bed. That truck has started to turn my opinion on the HD truck market. The price was way lower than Ford and had decent options for the price. Oh yeah that sucker moved. It blows away the new Ford they have especially since it's sitting at the dealer all the time due to not starting after it reaches temperature.
