460 Oil pressure dropped from 75 - 30 during run in... HELP!!!!

During the run in of my 460... this happened...

Primed oil pump, and soaked cam gear with cam lube...
Fired it up... started right up..

Brough it up to 2000 rpm, oil pressure was @ 75 psi (HV Pump)
Water temp was still low...

After 5 minutes Oil Pressure was @ 50
It starting ticking (lifters) After 10 minutes, I checked the
Oil Pressure and it was @ 25-30

I SHUT IT DOWN!!

The Water temp never got over 200 degrees

I fired it up for a brief time.. I set the idle down to 700rpm... @ 700 rpm I was reading ZERO PSI then when I rev'd it went up to 30

Not sure whats wrong...

here are a few things I think it MIGHT BE...

I hope its not this one....
1) Oil passage cracked in block
---> Cause as the block got hotter... (never got about 200) the oil passage crack opens up.. hence the drop in pressure

2) Blocked Screen on oil pick up
3) Bad/Weak pump?

Who knows what else.. If it is a cracked oil passage is there a way to check for that when getting a used block???

460 Oil pressure dropped from 75 - 30 during run in... HELP!!!!

LAST EDITED ON 11-Jul-01 AT 10:49 PM (EST)[p] I seriously doubt you have a cracked oil passage, the 460 block is quite hardy and in all the times I've seen damage done to a 460 block was when a con rod let go. How was block cleaned prior to rebuild? There could have been some trash left in the oil gallery's that became loose with the use of engine cleaners, but were never removed until 70 psi of hot oil hit them and either dumped the trash into the oil filter (hopefully) or maybe plugged up the oil pump's pickup screen. Another reason could be a spun bearing (cam or main) causing the oil starvation or even an oil gallery plug that wasn't sufficiently sealed and/or tightened and worked it's way loose. Hey you did the right thing by shutting it down, I believe the worst case senario would be gaskets and some bearings, along with the skinned knuckles & a few cuss words thrown in.

I have personally seen a 460's aftermarket oil pump fail because of breakage to pump's cas iron case.

One other possibility is your oil pressure gauge or the sending unit. It may not be it, but I know when I rebuilt my 460 I had problems with my sending unit. It started off good, stayed high through my entire run-in, then a couple of days later it started acting crazy. I replaced the sending unit and have had no problems since. Good luck.

Well I am using a Autometer Mechanical gauge and the reason I think that the gauge is fine is that the Lifters are ratteling.. and the lifters would clatter if you lost oil pressure and the lifter has lost its prime.

I think the problem is more extensive than simply a bad gauge

Did you plasti-gauge the main and rod bearings during assembly? You wouldnt be the first guy to get mis-marked bearings.

460 Oil pressure dropped from 75 - 30 during run in... HELP!!!!

Well Well Well...

Finally had a chance to pull the engine ( Tried dropping the pan to get pump out.. YEA RIGHT!!)

Found out the pump was junk!! Which is GREAT NEWS, my engine guy is going to look at the insides and see how things are....

So keeping my fingers crossed that the bearings are ok.. we shall see.. unfortunaly for me, fortunately for the engine guy.. I am off to attend my Army Reserve 2 weeks and will not know anything for a few weeks...

I will keep you all posted !

BTW the plugs are DRY.. and look great.. oh yea.. my Dizzy gear is wearing PERFECTLY this time....
