$400 a good price for a 460
Right now I have created a 1984 F-350 4x4 460 4-spd with dana 60 front, sterling 10.25 with 4:10, 4in lift and 35 BFG's. I first had a 351w and c-6, I switched last fall to a 460 4-spd (T-19 I think, sycro first). The motor was said to have only 7,000 miles on it, but ever since I put it in coolant keeps dissapearing and since I hooked up the oil gauge the pressure is very high when first started, then drops bellow low when warmed up after a drive.
Now I found a 460 that has all the machine work done to it with what my friend tells me has cobra jet rods and I think flat top pistons. All the parts are new and just needs to be assembled. The only things missing is the intake, exhaust manifolds and oil pan. The guy wants $400 dollars for everything.
Besides that I have a couple other questions:
1. What books are out there that are helpful in learning about the 460 and how to build it.
2. What would be a good recipe for my truck. Its built to pull haul and move off-road and street.
3. What intake and exhaust should I use. Right now I have stock intake and exhaust manifolds and a 600 holley.
4. only last question, how do you tell the year of the motors.
Thanks for taking the time for the post, I just want to be able to enjoy my truck for a change and have it reliable for daily driving in the winter and to plow with.
Thanks again,
Craig

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-May-02 AT 02:51 PM (EST)]How To Rebuild Ford Engines:351C,351M,400,429,460,by Tom Monroe,is a good book to have if you're rebuilding one of these engines.Ford Perfomance,by Pat Ganahl,is also a book of great information, and covers all Ford families of V-8s.It has a good section on the 429/460 385-series big-blocks.If your 460 still has stock exhaust manifolds, and it's stock, cast iron intake manifold,I'd upgrade to a set of headers& a dual plane, aftermarket aluminum intake wearing a 750 cfm 4 bbl. carb. For towing and/or street duty,I'd put an RV-type cam in your 460.You want good torque down low&in the mid-range rpm to pull well, and accelerate a heavy vehicle from a stop. You'll want torque to do this rather than building a 460 for racing duty.Even in the mildest of street form,a 460 can be built to easily have 500 lb./ft. of torque,or more.Mid-'87 & later 460 engines featured EFI.To discover what decade a block,or any other engine part, like heads, and intake manifolds were cast just look at the first letter of the part's #.C=1960s,D=1970s,E=1980s,and F=1990s.So if,say, you have a "D1VE" cylinder block, you would know it was originally cast in the 1970s.The second digit will be a number from 0-9.In this example,a "1" would indicate 1971.The third digit will indicate what bodystyle the part came in.In this example, "V" would indicate a Lincoln. Here are some of the bodystyle codes: A= fullsize Ford(Galaxie),F=Pinto,Maverick, and Falcon,M=Mercury,O=Fairlane,Torino,S=Thunderbird,T =Truck,V=Lincoln, and Z=Mustang,Mustang II.These are for 60's&70's vehicles.I know the bodystyle codes for 80's& 90's vehicles are different.Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. Where would be a good place to find Tom's book. I just want a good powerfull motor. The one I have in my truck right now has a 60's or early70's cast Iron four barrel(I have not look for the year yet), stock cast exhaust manifolds and a 600cfm holley.
The old girl has more power than the old 351w did, but still lacks the get up and go. I just need to stop buying motors other people have assembled.
I may go with the partially assembled one if I can find more information on the parts. But I will definitly try to get Tom's book.
Thanks again,
