Need some help with Info C vs M

OK I found a motor being advertised near me that says
" seventy something 351 M + c4 trans out of a 73 mustang "
now I talked to the guy + he said some guy he knew told him it was a 351M, but as far as I know those never came in a mustang? of course it could be a transplant? did M's come with c4's? or can you bolt a c4 to a M?
now I think it is a Cleveland, did clevelands come with big block bolt patterns for the trans or small block pattern? What is my best way of Identifying this Motor as to what it is? M? or Cleveland? Boss 351? or Cobra Jet? he wants $250 for both, + I might pick it up? but I want to know what it is, it is supposed to be a running motor? but who knows?, it might be a good source of some good parts running or not?? , I want to build something cool in the future so any help would be great!, Thanks Guys Have a Merry One!!! .....Rick

It's more than likely a 351C. The 351M didn't arrive until MY1975 and no Mustangs ever had the M or 400 from the factory. I doubt anyone swapped it in because it would have been a PITA. I dropped a 400 into an Aussie Falcon which shares it's engine compartment with Mustang/Fairlane and it wasn't easy. No 351C had a big Ford bellhousing. The 351M did get a C4 adn the bellhousings are a good find. Some low buck 460 drag racers use them to run a C4.

D5OP-7976-BA is the C4 bellhousing big bell pattern. And I'm looking for one. But I'm willing to bet it's a 351C, also.

On the 351C the intake manifold sits about level with the Tstat housing flange. On a 351M/400, the intake manifold is about 1 inch above the Tstat flange. This is because the 351M/400 have a 1.1 inch taller deck height.
The 351M/400 never had a factory 4 barrel carb. If it has a factory 4 barrel manifold, it is a 351C. The manifolds do not interchange directly between these motors.
