Finally- 1000 Miles on the rebuilt rebuilt

This past week I finally got the truck past the first 1000 miles on my rebuilt rebuilt engine. It is still running well, except for the knocking (probably wrist pin). So when do I get to start running this motor harder????

In auto-body class this week I repaired a broken fender mount brace on the rear passenger side in front of the wheel well. It was tough to get all the metal cleaned up, but the welding went fast. My instructor wasn't exactly sure which way we were going to weld it so I made a backing piece that would be lap welded connecting the two pieces the were broken. It turned out we didn't need it. He did the welding on it since we were running out time. It is not a pretty weld, but it is strong. Since it doesn't show, who cares how it looks.

I am going to try and pick up or order an edelbrock intake and carb this weekend or next week. I want to fix the fuel problem soon and hopefully get a few more ponies out of the engine. On top of all that, Val and I are going to my company's Christmas party in the city.

Enough about me, what's up with you all?

Karl

Karl, Glad to hear about the 1000 miles on your rebuilt engine.

Soon it'll be 2000, then 3000, and so on.

Sounds like you're have a bit of fun in your auto-body class.

Have fun at the Christmas party.

As for me, I'm recovering from emergency surgery. Fun fun fun.

Ya know...99% of pretty welds are good welds...and 99% of ugly welds are poor welds...just something to think about...but alls not lost, clean it all up and make some good passes on it.

What kind of gun and nozzle are you using (assuming your mig'ing it), I mainly use a narrowed nozzle, allows me to get in closer into tighter places.

''It is still running well, except for the knocking (probably wrist pin)''

Then I would count 1,000 miles a blessing. It will die shortly with a bad wrist pin.

Congrats Fastmover! Have a good recovery Sierra!

With hope you'll have a hundred more such milestones and with less pinging soon. I've read your threads regarding the noise but don't remember if you've confirmed what is actually causing the noise.

From what I've read the consensus of two gearheads is that it's the wrist pin but one, seemingly, gearhead argues that it's common to assume the knock is wrist pin but turns out to be something else.

I'll check the threads to see what progress comes of this issue at the same time hoping you get it resolved with minimal investment (time\money).

Sounds like you're getting yourself, or your truck, an early Christmas present with the intake and carb...awesome.

I'm still thinking it's exhaust leak. Or, low octane ping. But, I'd have to listen to it and try a couple of things to know for sure. Of course, it could be a bad wrist pin ... but, let hope not. I mean you just had the motor rebuilt. Not sure way that would be an issue.

He's hoping the best...... ;-)

I am running the highest octane I can buy. There is an exhaust leak, but it sounds mechanical.

Thanks for the well wishes.... I am looking forward to getting the new intake and carb in it.

I think so. After what everyone here said and my local mechanic, it is a noise I will have to live with. I learned a few lessons though.
  1. Be really picky about who rebuilds your motor.
  2. Get it done locally, don't try to drive from Montana with it at the end of break-in.
  3. Look at getting it from a place like Jasper engines that has a nationwide warrantee. This is good if you want a stock engine.
AJ.. (and everyone else in the chapter) If you are bored and in the Vallejo area, stop on by for a beer.

Thanks Karl.
It was an emergency hernia surgery repair.

Sounds like your truck is on its way to completion.

That's good.

Have you tried listening to the noise with a stethoscope? They sell them at HF for $3. That way you might isolate where the noise is coming from. JAG

Yes Sir! I will.

That is a good idea on the stethoscope.

We use to use a length of heater hose back in the day.
