In town mileage is pretty bad, but either somethings wrong with the truck, or your driveing style.

The 04 in my sig gets at round 15-16 in town, but I take it easy on acceleration.
Some people say keep it under 2,000 RPMs, and gas mileage will improve.....I keep it under 1,500 RPMs while accleration, and I don't do over 60.

Ok, what size tires did your truck come with, and what gear ratio does it have now?

I'd say 4.56 gears would be a good choice, but 4.30 or 4.88 might be a option depending on your situation, and how much you use the truck to tow.

The $1,200 would be will labor
My shop charges $300 labor per axle, so for two axles, half the price is labor alone.

4.10 gears would bring you back to a stock effective gear ratio, but 4.30 gears would help more with acceleration, and if you would of had 3.55 gears, then 4.56 gears would of been a good choice.

I'd either go with 4.30 gears or 4.56 gears if you do it, 4.10 gears just wouldn't be worth the money.

You really should do both at one time, but if you take the front driveshaft out, and do the rear gears, and don't put the shaft back in until you do the front gear change, then that'd be ok, but you just won't have 4wd until you regear your front diff.

Look, I'm an old guy. But in my younger days, I bought a new 1982 Nissan 2wd King Cab with a diesel engine and skinny tires. It looked wimpy, but got 42 mpg. I liked the mileage, but hated the sissy look, so I added a 4" lift and big tires and wheels. The mileage immediately went to 18mpg and the performance was absolutely horrific since the little diesel was pretty gutless anyway. But hey, now I was cool!

You may not like this response, but you spent good money on a 3.5" lift and 35 tires, then you complain about fuel economy? What did you expect? You have significantly increased rolling resistance, as well as aerodynamic drag due to the added lift. Sure, you could throw more money at it by adding an edge, or chip, then throw more money at it by putting in lower gears.

So you "invest" $2-3000 in all of these mods to maybe increase your mileage to say, 15mpg. If gas is $3.00/gal, you would have to drive 40,000-60,000 miles to break even.

If it was me, (of course I'm an old fart now and couldn't care less about being cool) I would put the stock tires and wheels back on and run 45-50 psi in the tires. Your fuel economy will definitely improve, and it won't cost you a dime.

Check this web site out. It will explain the tire size change effect on gear ratio and help you determine next gear size. You will just need to know current tire size vs. new tire size.
Good Luck
