4.6l help

hey my buddy has a 05 f150 4x4 with the 4.6l v8. while cruisin around today i finally heard the ticking sound he was talkin about before with it, he has taken it to the local ford dealership (not on warrenty anymore) and they changed all the lifters in the left bank so hes told me but it still has a intermiedate ticking sound to it, we drove about 100 miles today and the sound came and went for a while then on the way back home it was fine, any ideas on what i should start lookin for?

oh the engine has 65000k on it

i dont think its exhaust it sounds like its comin from the left side, more towards the firewall under the valve cover, its odd cuz it comes and goes, its not a constant thing, it happens just whenever for a bit then disapears for a while the local ford dealership cant figure it out even

if its coming from under the valve cover ,then i guess it could be a collapsed or sticking lifter.does the ticking increase with rpm ?or maybe a rocker arm could be the culprit.

tickin will increase with rpm, and its a top end tick, ford just repolaced the lifters on one side cuz they thought that was the problem, and the truck has been back a few times since and the dealer cant figure it out and its not always there sometimes it'll come then go on its own, it just pops up randomly and not too often

lifters on an OHC motor? I was told there are no Lifters or pushrods in a OHC motor. If the dealer changed them what did they change, lol.

Does it seem to run ok I had a bad COP no 4 cylinder. Could it be a short in the COP arcing on something else? Run is in the dark and take a look.

The changed the lash adjusters. They pump up with oil like lifters do to keep the cam followers (rockers) tight.

I'd recommend checking to make sure the spark plugs are torqued to the proper setting. I experienced a ticking sound like that and after a couple of months it changed very suddenly to a loud popping sound. Blew out the #6 cylinder spark plug. Had to have the head drilled, tapped, and an insert put in to screw the plug back into.

I've read that blowing plugs is a common problem on all Ford engines.

what did it run you to have the head drilled and helicoil put in? Just curious case it ever happens to me. I just did my plugs and it was really hard to torque the rear 4 plugs without a torque wrench that clicks with the correct torque. Mine clicking torque wrench only went down to 20ft lbs I have a needle wrench which sucks in tight quarters so I hand tightened the best I could and crossing fingers.

It was a full insert, not a helicoil. I'd have to look it up again but the garage did not pull the head. That plus replacing all of the plugs (and properly torquing them) ran about $750.

Sorry - didn't mean to hijack the thread.

The 4.6 is just like the 5.4 in design. They both have lifters and overhead camsafts.
