86 460 pump location

I am having fuel supply trouble to my carb. Does the 86 have electric pumps in the tank? My manuals arent specific... I havent checked for the inertia switch or pump relay casue I wasnt sure of the pump type. My truck isnt at the house so I am trying to study up on the problem.... thanks folks.

Yes, there is an electric pump in the tank or tanks as the case may be. Check the fuel filter on the frame rail and there is a fuel filter screen in the tank on the end of the pickup.

Where abouts would the fuel filter on the frame rail be? I've looked on my 84 F250 w/ 460 and I can't find one. Unless its different for that year.

Mine is also an '84 and it doesn't have one. But my buddy's '84 has one so it's kinda a hit and miss thing. I installed a Marine spin on water seperator/fuel filter on mine because it didn't have one.

Thanks Bear, my deal was that the oil pressure switch (or wires) was bad. For other folks... The power to the fuel pump sequence goes >oil pressure switch>inertia switch>fuel pump. With the key in the ON position, jumper the oil pressure wires and you should hear the in-tank pump run. If you dont, then check the inertia switch. I am sure there is a fuse somewhere and possibly a fuel pump relay but I didnt find one...

There is a fuel pump fuse or in my truck's case a circuit breaker that plugs into the fuse box. One of those metal jobs. My tach runs off it so it the tach is dead the CB fell out because the fuse box cover came loose. The truck will start because the pump(s) are run off the start solenoid.

So how do you tell if the pump is bad vs these other problems?

Jumper +12 volts from the battery to the wire going to the small terminal on the starter solenoid. Pump should run. If not the pump is bad. If you have dual tanks the selector switch is still in the circuit.
