or look on the right side stamped tag of the rear differential cover. 3 consecutive numbers such as 355, 331, 373 or 410.

Your highway mileage might actually improve with the larger tires and 373's. Your city might take a slight dip, like 2/10's of 1mpg

That is of course, in relation to the 285 tires, which in themselves will give you a slight dip.

In town and 3.73s in a good thing, and on the hwy with overdrive, there is nothing to worry about.
I've gotten well over 20 many times on hwy trips, and 16 in town(04 F150 screw 4x4 w/ 3.73s and 32" tires).

In peoples opinion, which size would you rather go with 305/65/17 or 285/70/17?

The 305s will fill out the wheel wells more, but for several reasons, I'd get the 285s.
Reasons for 285 over 305:
Better MPGs
Won't decrease the affective gear ratio to much compaired to stock.
Better acceleration(b/c of the close to stock affective gear ratio, which in turn results in more MPGs).
And they're cheaper.

27 is 3.55 open diff.
I don't think you have 3.31(which is code 19), or 4.10.
is that what 19 stands for? no wonder my truck is a turd compared to my old 2wd reg cab with 3.73s...

ahh sumbish! lol

Sorry, I mixed some things up:
17 is 3.31 gears and open
19 is 3.55 and open.
