Good news all around guys - thanks for the advice. Picked up a 97 Expedition as a weekend warrior last week. In the shop now for fluid changes, plugs and a wheel bearing - but it has 130k on it all in all seems in pretty good shape.
i have 292,000 on my f250 5.4 ,,just now started having a few issues but it still starts and runs ,great oil pressure,,,i changed plugs and fuel filter, now it kinda vibrates at idle, and has a knock on passenger side of engine,,,still got to figure that out,,
I have a work truck I drive that has 255k on its 5.4 ...untouched so far except normal maint.
This was a HUGE deciding factor when I chose an Expedition over a Suburban. I do think the 350 Chevy engine will run 200k miles but those 95-99 versions I was looking at usually need a tranny right on cue at 100k miles. The 4r100 behind the 5.4 in my 99 Expy is similar to the ones behind the Super Duty trucks. I definately have more drivetrain than I need, I like it that way.

I get a knock or a thud too every ONCE and a while...I cant think of anything that will cause that.
My friend Mike has 375k on his CrownVic cab (former municipal car), original motor still smooth, doesn't burn any appreciable oil. On an aside, still somehow has the original transmission although it hunts around in and out of OD but still shifts tight.
177K on an 04 4.6 E250, 172K on a 00 5.4 Expy. They both run extremely well. No major problems and routine maintenance. I run Max Life oil and change every 5K. They run like they day they were new. Honestly. Gas mileage has not changed. I have replaced the plugs in the 5.4 but that's it. I think I will do the 4.6 plugs this winter. No plans to get anything new. Just keep driving them. Great friggin motors.

82,000 on my 02 5.4 and I am using about 1 qt every 700 miles.I got a lemon.
What motor oil are you using? While mine was under warranty I let the dealership do the oil changes, and of course they use the Motorcraft semi-syn. I used (not leaked) about a quart per interval then. Now that it is out of warranty, my trusty old mechanic does all the maintenance. He keeps conventional Chevron Supreme or Havoline on the shelf and usually uses the Chevron. Since then the oil level shows on the dipstick at the same level throughout the entire oil change interval.
