1989 F150 Transmission Help

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 1989 2WD F150 that has transmission problems, the previous owner gave up on fixing it.
The problem is that the one in the truck and the spare trans he gave me are not the right ones for the truck and he did not have the original anymore.
My question is ...Is there any way to find out what the original trans is, maybe by the VIN???
I already tried the local dealer with the VIN, but, the only help they gave me that maybe the right trans tag # should start with "E9TP" and that the rear housing should measure either 10 and 1/4 inches or 11 and 1/4 inches.
Any body have any sugestions, web sites with diagrams, or one I could use the VIN on???? Anything would be a great help.
I need a starting point in order to find/locate the right trans.
Thanks
giorno

Look on door sticker and find the trans code. The sticker should be under the striker in the driver side door jamb. At the bottom of the sticker there is a section that has different codes. Find the trans code and post it on here.

That would be the AOD Transmission.
Are the two transmissions you have now AOD's and if so what is the Problem?
Why do you say they are the wrong Transmissions?

I gave both of the tag #s to the dealer and they said neither was for my truck.
The on ein it now only goes in reverse and 1st gear, it won't shift to 2nd, 3rd, or OD.
And the wiring harness only has one plug in the tranny for the neutral safety switch, there is another plug just haning out by the tranny. Also the mechanical speedometer cable it just hanging there with no were to put it in the housing. This is the
The other tranny has the 11 and 1/4 hoousing with a hole for the speedo, and neutral safety switch but no spot for the other plug on the harness.
Also both tranny's linkage seem to be at the wrong angle or length for the throttle vavle kickdown cable.
Thanks for your help.
Hope this helps

Well the one that is in now sounds like a 4R70W transmission or some PCM computer controlled transmission.
On the "other" transmission I am not sure what you mean about the plug on the harness.
You need just a plane old AOD transmission out a late 80s F150 2WD Truck with the same wheelbase and engine 302/351.
The wrong angle sounds like they may be out of a Van.

I just replace the trany in my 1989 F150.
Cost me just under $300 CDN to get a used one from the wreckers.
It seems to work great.

From everything that you wrote and what the other guys are saying you should have the same trany as mine.I am positive the EPTP is even the same.

Mine is an AOD trany with a 10 1/4 ext.
This is for a F150 (302) 2WD.
The shifter may give some further indication.
Mine shows P R N (D) D 1.
Hope this helps

That is a great help and it is appreciated.
My truck sounds identical to yours.
But,
I do have a couple of questions...
Does your tranny only have the neutral safety switch plud and mechanical odometer or does also have another plug coming from the wiring harness, maybe for some other sensor???
Also does anyone know any differences between an AOD and an AODE-W tranny???
Doe the AODE-W have that extra plug or am I reading to much into this.
I just want to get the right one the 1st time.
Thanks

His and yours should only have the neutral safety switch/back up lamp switch (same part) plug & the mechanical odometer/speedometer with the VSS sensor plug on piggyback.

The AODE-W (4R70W) will have another plug in for the shift solenoids/TC Clutch/Temp Sensor.

The mechanical odometer/speedometer with the VSS sensor plug on piggyback that goes into the hole on the AOD.

Thanks for posting the pic.
But,
Mine looks a little different...
The male end, that inserts into the tranny, has a threaded/toothed gear on the end.

The threaded/toothed gear is sold separately.
