Question Creating a real tough truck?

Looking at a 94 F-450 7.3 IDI turbo with 130k 2wd e4od used for towing horse trailer. Is there anything I should look for?

They only thing I don't like is that the truck doesn't have power windows/locks and it's not 4x4. I can get a 93 F250 xlt 4x4 7.3 diesel for a $1000 but it reverse is blown. I'm hoping to switch the powerwindows/locks and a/c system cause the 450s is broken. That should work???

Other than that looking at swaping in the 250s front setup for 4x4. Is this 100% bolt up swap, whats involved, can it be done, will it weaken my front end????

Most diesel trucks get stuck in wet grass without 4x4...

If the reverse is out - is Overdrive still there?

I'm sure adding all that can be done. I wouldn't think it'd be worth all that, though.

Sounds like a lot of work and money for less of a truck. Why swap an F250 front end into an F450? That sounds like a downgrade to me.

Good luck. If you decide to go ahead and do it, we'd like to hear about the results, with pictures, please.

No, I don't literally mean all that in that way, but it's true an f450 4x4 wouldn't do much more than the 2wd. I could still get the pw/pl from another junk vehicle.

But is there anything I should look for?

Theres a 95 powerstroke F450 I am interested in also, anything wrong to look for?

Do the usual stuff...Check for rust. Check all the fluids. Check the tires, rims, brakes, air filter, P/S fluid, tranny fluid. Pull the intake hoses and check the turbo fins. Check the batteries.

Hit the body panels with the palm of your hand. Give 'em a good smack, but don't dent them. If you hear sounds like something is falling inside the panels, walk away. That sound is most likely pieces of rust breaking loose from the inside.

Someone had a link with an awesome list of things to check before buying a used truck. I can't find it. Hopefully, someone will post it again. If (When) they do, I'm bookmarking it this time.
