Same Problem

This thread describes the exact same problem I'm having with my 98 F-150. I've had the pan gasket replaced at a transmission shop and it still leaks right at the cross-member. It almost looks like the fluid is seeping from the bolt holes. I can't tell (nor could Aamco.. (not a slam)) if fluid is coming from above the pan and dripping down over the pan flange and then to the cross-member. It does seem after changing the gasket it has slowed down but it's not stopped. I hope someone can continue this thread that has some ideas or experience with this problem on the F-150. BTW, my setup is the same as the one described here.. small V-8 4x4 etc. Thanks for any help in advance and if I solve the problem I'll post back here.

Question

Update: I've identified the leak and it sounds like it may be the same problem as originally described here. The leak is coming from the seal between the transfer case and the transmission. This unfortunately means pulling most everything apart to replace.

Question: is there any product you could use i.e. RTF that you could put on the outside of this area that stop the leaking? Is this advisable?

I would not advise that. Your best bet would be to get a new extension housing gasket and transfer case gasket and replace both at the same time.

Have you check your level in your T-Case first?

96f150... I have not checked the level in the t-case yet, but I will. Regardless, the gaskets will need to be replaced but I will check the input shaft seal. No use intearing it apart that far and not check. Anything else I should look for or change while it's apart? Thanks everyone for the posts... much appreciated!

fixed ours

could not in any way in hell pull the case back far enough to replace the tranny tail to the adapter plate gasket

so i used the common orange colored RTV gaskt maker sealer you get in the bigger aluminum squeeze tubes for like 8 bucks a pop these days, omg expensive they used to only be 3.00 something! :O
*******s!

RTV for both gaskets and its fixed doing awesome took the truck on a few highway along trips and bene driving it for weeks and its perfect

done

broken off adapter bolt we got out with small vise grips

and found a replacement metric small long bolt same threads and length to replace it, from our huge left over metric bolts collection from years of repair work for ppl. engine swpas trans swaps and so much more haha

RTV works

is all i can say

the ****in crossmember at the back of the trans case will not allow the case to come back far enough to remove the adapter and let you replace that front gasket

not on a 97 F150 with 4 speed auto and BW electric shift case

impossible!!

unless you pull the ****ing engine and trans out too! :0

we even pulled the trans mount crossmember.. AND the small crossmember behind that..

still no luck!!

also all the baljoints were beyond shot, and the control arm rubber bushings were extremely dry and loud noisy bad and you can remove the damn arms without removing the rods...

so know what we did?

we drilled a hole in the metal around each bushing and installed grease zerks!

works great!

now all are quiet and greased permanently!

oh! and not to mention that the ****in front brake rotors were rusted/siezed/self welded to the damn bearing hubs that NAPA's 9 ton press couldnt get them separated, we had to soak and beat and wedge and torch heat them for two days to finally get them off so we could replace them because they were totally shot.

damn fords ahhhhhhhhhh
****ers!!

!!!(pulls hair out)

finally the damn truck is safely driveable again and ready to pull the boat trailer and use without fear of it falling apart literally.
