How many miles on the engine? I would make sure the engine/rest of the drivetrain is sound before forking out the bucks for the new turbo. Adding more power to a tired motor is last thing you want to do. Are you planning to do other mods to the motor?

bl311 nailed it....a turbo is a lot of money and dissapointment, if you have a tired engine [etc]!!

the motor etc has 107k on it i bought it with 105k from the original owner, an elderly man who only even used it with a camper on the back. oil was changed every 2-3 thousand (i found all the reciepts in the glove box) recently had glow plugs, alt, and starter replaced. i dont believe its tired, but this is my first diesel. what are everyones thoughts. should i go for it or not?

thanks guys

if it were me 'd go for it. even if you do break the moter or something in there its allways possible to replace of fix it. mine has 250,000+ and it has never had an engine problem whatsoever. -it still hasn't even had the injectors replaced-
and i gotta say for my first car that wasn't dumptruck. i like it a lot

With 107k miles, that's barely broken in. Sounds like it would be a nice mod. I would still plan on doing all the other things to keep the truck running well. (IP check, Injector check, and return line replacement along with all the fluids).

Talking

Keith, If you want the added power, it's a great way to go it you have the money and time. It's recommended because it really does unleash the motors potential..... but were all kind of biased on the forum. You'll get sucked in and get a new injection pump, DPS stage 1 injectors, water/methanol and propane injection, head studs and cranking up the boost to the high teens. But ultimately it's your call and sure it's OK and fun to spend your money.

There are many posts regarding both systems, both seem pretty good.

Ram air should be on your short list.

i had another thought after i made the call to banks and found out the kit price of $2900 and figuring int my other expenses realize i cant afford it right now

i was wondering would it be possible to go to a yard and pull a turbo off a volkswagon or something could i possibly hook that up? i figure i wont have the same amount of boost or anything but maybe i could get some kind of gain form it? maybe there are a few low-buck mods available or tweaks i can do with what i have already?
thanks guys,
keith

In that case your looking at a custom turbo setup and that'll still cost you over a grand.

Assuming its a cat or cummins engine, that turbo is probably way to big if it's on a truck that size. A the least of making a custom kit you need to get custom piping, turbo housing, etc. You maybe able to swap with moderate modification from a turbo idi or psd.

class 8 truck engines usually run in the 30-40 lb of boost range. putting a turbo like that on an IDI engine would blow the heads off it. anything over 15 lbs of boost on a stock IDI is asking for trouble like catastrophic engine failure. that is why the aftermarket turbo guys limit boost to under 10 lbs.
