How do I order a F-450 chassis cab for max. towing capacity??
How should I configure a new 2008 4X4, 6.4L, F-450 or F-550 chassis cab for the maximum towing capacity when ordered from the factory?
I'm wanting just a basic LX model that will give me the max. tow rating and I'd prefer the 6-speed manual transmission, but the towing guide lists the automatic transmissions as having higher tow ratings, so I'd go that way if it's true.
Is the 33,000 lb GCWR listed in the 2008 towing guide for an auto. trans. F-550 accurate? If not, what is the max. towing available and what truck has it?
Why do the auto. transmission trucks have a higher tow rating?
It just seems that the various websites that Ford has with F-450 & F-550 information on them don't agree with each other or with the 2008 Advance Towing Guide or with the list of major product changes (JOB 2) that I downloaded from one of the Ford dealers. So I don't know what to believe is accurate or the latest information.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to get the most accurate & latest up to date information from you guys here. I've found in the past that going to a dealer is not always the best source of information unfortunately.
Thanks in advance everyone.

Regarding the question of why automatic tranny's have higher torque ratings, I think that one reason is because they include engine braking as part of the package (tow/haul mode). I don't think that this is an option with the manuals.
A high CGWR is not just about pulling power - it's about braking capacity as well.
