4.2 towing

Now you got me wondering. I have a 2000 supercab, V6, 3.55 gears and a five speed. It has 60000 miles. I pull a 5000 pound travel trailer and a boat. The biggest problem is the low end grunt. Sometimes I need to smoke the clutch while pulling the boat out of the water. I know the clutch is absolute junk. Are the 2000 4.2 any better than the earlier ones?

4.2 towing

I have a '97 4.2L auto and recently pulled a full-size cabin cruiser out of the local river. We hit flood levels and everyone needed to get out while they still could. Mine was the only truck on site with a 2" ball, so the decision to try was an easy one.

Everyone there was shaking their heads and figured there was no way it would make it out. Even the old Ford guys said their trucks could never pull it.

I hardly had to press on the accelerator. It came out slow and steady and we parked it up on the dike for safe keeping.

I wouldn't want to drive down the highway with something that size, but the low end ability was impressive that day!
