15 qts ?

I changed the oil and filter on my 6.4, let it set overnight, and the dipstick only shows oil on the very tip. Does it take 16 qts?

What does your manual say? Assuming the truck is sitting on level ground then low is low and you need more oil. Just make sure there is NO indication of oil anywhere in the proper range on the dipstick. Clean oil is sometimes (or most of the time) hard to see and sometimes you will rub some off the dipstick while removing it. Look along the edges of the dipstick and make sure you don't see an oil level there. I'm sure one of the 6.4 owners will tell you what they put in their trucks pretty soon.

I used 15qts and it was correct on the stick. Of course that was 15qts of cj-4, if you put something else in it may vary.

Hello all;
Just a random question, but how would 15 quarts of cj-4 vary in volume to 15 quarts of something else? Last time I checked quarts are quarts. The viscosities of any oil you dumped in would be close enough to all land in the pan.

Maybe you should ask this question 97squarebody.

What weighs more?

A pound of oil?
or
A pound of water?

Actually, as we slowly convert everything over to the metric system, our old system of measure quits working. Pretty soon we'll all be 6 foot tall, no matter how tall we are.
