Which brand oil should I use for my 1999 5.4 Expy?

Which brand oil should I use for my 1999 5.4 Expy?
I'm tired of changing my oil - I end up paying about the same whether I do it myself or have someone else do it. My problem is this: my brand of choice is Valvoline - it seems to leave the least amount of gunk in the bottom of the pan (as opposed to Castrol GTX, which seemed to leave TONS of sludge in there...) And most places seem to use Castrol or Quaker State. Is there really any difference? Would I be better off with my Valvoline/Fram Oil filter combination? Or would the stock Ford filters at the dealership suffice?
I guess what I'm asking is: If it costs the same whether I change the oil myself or pay someone, which way should I go?
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

First of all,how can you determine the amount of sludge coming out of your oil pan?Man,if i had sludge in my motor ide be very worried. This is the 1st time ive heard Castrol leaving sludge in a motor. Now Quaker state, I can believe it would leave sludge.I sometimes change my own oil,and i use either Havoline or Castrol with Motorcraft filters. If i get lazy and have it done i try to find the lowest price oil change but make sure they are using a name brand oil;I always bring my own filter,Motorcraft,to have installed on my motor.

In the past, in my other cars, I'd find a bunch of crap when I pulled the pan. When I switched to Valvoline, things generally stayed much cleaner - clean enough that I don't use Castrol anymore. Whether or not I'm just being a #####, I don't know - but I feel better.
