1999 5.4 with 251K now using about 1 quart of oil every 800 miles. Lucas oil additive or synthetic oil makes no difference. Seems to be getting worse in a hurry. Truck has always been owned by me and has been babied and maintained. Transmission replaced about 3 years ago.

 

I have an 00 Expy 5.4 with 182K on her. Regular maintenance, 3 sets of plugs, a few coil packs, and original tranny. She gets the same mileage as the day I bought her. I also have an 04 E250 with 187K and a 4.6. Just had the plugs changed, new alternator and that is about it. Runs like a top. I am hoping for 250K to 300K out of both of them. I am also running Valvoline Max life oil now. Neither of them seem to burn any oil and I change every 5000 miles. With good maintenance I think these will run to 300K and higher.

Yeah my parents current van is a 1999 E-350 extended model with the 5.4L Modular that just hit 305,000 miles on the same motor and transmission. Their previous van was a 1994 E-350 extended van with the good old 5.8L Windsor and it had 408,000 miles on the same motor and transmission. They retired it cuz the interior was pretty rough....well we had a 1997 F-250 Heavy Duty that the stupid fram filter fell apart and ruined it's 5.8L engine so I figured I'd rebuild the engine on this 94 van and put it in the pickup. When I went to tear apart the engine, the pistons looked brand new, there was no ring ridge at the top of the cylinder wall, and the main and rod bearing were in great condition.......I was amazed ......for being an engine with 400k on it!!!!

 

wow that is a ton of miles. What brand of oil and filter was used and what interval was it changed. I really need to get that many miles from mine at 90,000 now.

That's the beauty of the whole deal....It was maintained regularly but there was no specific oil brand or type used, as being it conventional or blend oil. Overall though, the oil was changed every 5,000 miles. Oil that was used the most was TropArctic, then an occasional Pennzoil and Quaker State. The one thing (which goes against everyone who says if you go with synthetic, blend, or conventional) but the oil was changed between conventional and synthetic blend constantly. The filter's used the most was Fram for awhile until their quality became horrible, then we switched to Wix or Baldwin Filters. The vehicle was driven in a normal mode, meaning it wasn't babied and it was floored all the time. So it goes to prove all the people's dedication to using the same brand and type has been completely compromised. It just goes to prove that as long as you maintain your vehicle regularly and drive it in a good manner.

 

My sons has 250k and is still running with minimal maintenance.

 

my dad is running a 03/04 F150 heritage with the 5.4L in it and has done no maintence what so ever to it. i mean nothing besides oil changes every 5K miles he puts 10w-30 high mileage penzoil in it cause it burns some oil doesn't smoke at all or leak a single freaking thing. he has 135,000 miles and it starts up just as fast as my new ford superduty. built ford tough is right

 

My '00 E250 has 255K miles, original 4R70W trans too------not quite as peppy as a '99 E250 w/140K miles but still trouble free. Oil changes every 3K with NAPA Hi-Miler oil. I'm thinking on a new Ford 5.4 but this one seems to have enough life left---just don't want to get surprised someday!

 

The '01 that I had when I started this thread almost 10 years ago had 140k when I traded it in for the '06 King Ranch. The '06 had 54k when I got rid of that POS in '08. My '10 has 30k- it's 10 months old. Hopefully this truck will stick around for about 8-10 years.

Each motor seemed to be a little more athletic than previous one and each also got slightly better gas mileage. Never had any kind of problem with the motor. On the '01 the Idle control valve was cleaned then replaced but other than that no engine problems at all

 

my Dad just got got hit the other day in his 01 Expedition and they totalled it out with 331.000. He is on the road all day every day in it, and believe it or not, he does as little to it as possible and it was still running ok. Infrequent oil changes and never had the spark plugs replaced.

HOLY CRAP!!! I hope I get even half that many miles out of mine and I will be mighty happy!

 

Just got done tearing apart the engine in my parent's pickup, just as I did their van engine a few years ago. It's a 1998 F-150 with the 4.6L and the 4R70W. It just hit 308,000, and the only reason why I'm tearing it down is because the head gasket was leaking water to the outside of the engine. I figured since I had the engine out, that a quick overview of everything was just an oil pan away.

The cylinders have absolutely, none what so ever ring ridge at the top of the cylinder. The pistons have a very small amount of wear on the side. The bearings look amazing where the copper hasn't even started showing. The only major problem was the oil rings looked a little stuck. So now I'm just going to replace bearing, rings, and the oil pump and after honing the cylinders throw it all back together and hope to get at least another 300,000 miles out of it.

 

Update on my previous post - 2000 Expy 192K and the 04 E250 - 200K. Running perfect.

 

UUMMM? The bearings are solid aluminum and have always been in the modular engines.
