'94.5-'97psd V/s '99-'03psd???

I am looking at/for a super nice f350 2wd dually crew cab dually with a PSD.
I raelly want to stay with the older body style but I am open to up to 1999.
What are the differences, both good and bad on the '94.5-'97 V/S 1999-2003s?? also, did Ford NOT make a Diesel engined truck in 1998??

the 99 to 03 has more power...my truck was built in march of 98 but it was called the early 99.. they never did make a so called 98 power stroke..

The 94-97 are not intercooled. I too was looking at those years because I had a '93 gasser and liked the bodystyle. Found my early '99 at a good price and bought it .

Guys, Hey, Thanks for the replies and info!! So the intercooler helps make more power?? I think our brand new '06 PT Cruiser GT (with turbo) has an intercooler....must be some reason it makes 230 hp!!
Seriously though are the '99 up "better" in most ways?? how about the automatic transmissions?? are they better right out of the box?? I am looking very closely at a '99 F350 CC Dually close to me with just 69k original miles.
I really know very little about Diesels so what should/could I look for/at when I go to look at this one?? Thanks Again!!

Personaly, I prefer the older body style. Motor is completely stock. There are idiosyncracies with both styles. but on the 97 and earlier models they had many years to learn how to build them. My 2 cents worth

this is a good write up on what to look for buying a new truck

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...questions.html

in 99 they made an early and a late 99..any thing built before 12/98 has smaller inj. smaller turbo and a smaller HPOP..its still a good truck..but late 99 were a bit better..i up graded my turbo to a late 99 and see cooler exhaust temps..i want to do the inj and HPOP next...ive been told thats where i will feel the better power...the late 99 were much easer and cheaper to mod..but a good early 99 was a good truck as well...

Ive heard its a little better if u look for a later model 99 becuase it came with a larger turbo , but im not sure when exactly they started manufacturing them im sure someone else knows ... but i can tell you there is nothing wrong with the early model 99 as i have one myself but if i would of known in the begining i might have decided to go the later model one

I love the look of the OBS trucks but not as much as a Superduty, I craved a OBS for a long time but I never could find a good deal on one that wasn't junk. That is a great find on the 99 as long as there is nothing wrong on it with low miles like that hard to find.

the turbo on the right is the early 99..the left is a stock later year

this is the spider pipe ..where the turbo push the air though the IC and back down into the motor..you can see the early 99 on the right..the funnel looking tube sticking up gets smaller at the bottom..the later 99 it stays a full 3 inch..also at the bottom of the spider you see the 2 tubes that pushes air into the motor as a lot smaller then the later year..

Any 7.3 is a good truck. The OBS PSD as said lacks a bigger HPOP, turbo, injectors and it lacks an intercooler. All these things are interchangeable through the years so if you like the OBS then buy it and add the NBS equipment. Or buy the NBS 7.3 with all the goodies. Either way they're both great trucks!

thats what the site is for..

you can get a conversion kit to upgade to a late 99 here http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=276

comes with every thing but the turbo...i got my set up from a fellow FTE'r off of an 01...but the biggest power gain is in the HPOP and the injectors...
