It wouldn't upset me at all. I have gotten as high as 19.5 with my 97 F150 4.6 4x4 3.55s. That was after I ran through the whole tank. On the highway on a good day I probably hit between 18-22. I was told by the previous owner that the first owner consistantly got 20s out of the truck. Everything that is on the truck now was there when I got it. I have the 255/70R16 tires so that probably helps some too since it puts the motor closer to the power band.

Well, just got back from a road trip through British Columbia and my truck got an amazing 20 mpg...... AND I got these numbers with 3:55''s with 33' tires. The only thing I did notice from the last time I did the trip (exact same route) was it didn't hold speed as good through the hills, and I'm guessing that had to do with the taller tires than before. What really helped me find my sweet spot for cruising was the feed back from my gauges that I installed, to much gas and the temps started to increase.

What kind of lift kit do you have to get those 33 foot tires under there?

You've got me beat by a longshot. My stock '01 S'crew 4x2 with the 4.6L and 3.55s averages 17.7 in mixed driving (half and half combo of stop-and-go city and 80 mph interstate driving). It's done 21.xx on a 65 - 70 mph strictly interstate trip, but that's very uncommon.

sounds like your foot has a different weight than mine that may be the worst problem...

Always curious how you accurately calculate speed & mileage after installing oversized tires? Or have you reported uncorrected right off the odometer?

The range in MPG's reported here, from 12 to over 24 is beginning to make me suspicious. Got to wonder sometimes if everybody is up on their math, reporting from a single calculation, or really deviating from the norm individually. Also suspect there's a strong bias to report optimistic MPGs.

The vehicle I'm driving had every tank of gas put in it documented, but not entirely tabulated, just frequently divided out to spot check MPG. I computed the overall MPG, arriving at 22.6 for 10 years of use. The stock '98 F150 SuperCab XLT auto 4X4 I'm getting soon also has had every tankful recorded & has ranged between 15-17 MPG in gentle, mostly short run driving. Would love to be able to tweek that into the 18-22 MPG range mentioned. Might need to see the documentation for the 24.6 MPG claim before considering those mods, but certainly not "upset". More like encouraged to improve on FORD's Better Idea.

i wish i could get mine above the 16mpg mark. i ve worked with alot of 5.4l in vans and trucks. have yet to see one get 20mpg. would love to see how its done. i to have detailed records. this might be a good time to check them out. i think club may be on the right track a little optimistic. the current fleet of fords that i delt with were the 3 valve 5.4's no where near 20mpg. all were 3/4 tons.

Actually it was 19.7 to be accurate. My odometer was corrected with my tuner so that answers your question about that......I set the cruise at 110 kms/hr and that seemed to be optimal for my truck. The highway I took was relatively flat as well so not very many hills were encountered, no wind gusts and truck almost no weight in it except for myself and a suitcase. City driving usually gets me between 15-17.

My old 265's were 31.6 diameter and my current ones are 32.8...hardly a big difference.

guess i've got to do some hunting for reciepts eh?? each time i fill, i write down the mileage on the gas reciept then calculate the MPG. my claims of 24.6mpg are 100% right, no bs, and i have reason to believe that with a few more accessories i could beat that.

I just came back from canada and driving 60-65 with cruise on my '97 f-150 4.6l stock 3.55 shortbed w/ cap got 20.7 mpg, around town drops to 14 but it'll snap your neck and burn rubber like crazy if your not careful on the petal...156k miles on it.

I have some insight to share here (sorry for the long post).

With the truck in my signature, since new, I have used a program in my Palm Zire 72 to keep track of every expense on my truck. The program is called AutoMobile provided by Linke Soft and it is a shareware program.

http://www.linkesoft.com

Information tracked by this software includes, current fuel economy, average fuel economy, average distance (month and year), average cost per month, total cost, cost per mile, date of last fill up, mileage at last fillup, and estimated next fillup mileage.

Charting is provided for consumption by mileage, economy by mileage, consumption by date, economy by date, monthly cost, monthly distance, fuel price, cost by category (pie chart), and mileage by category (pie chart).

Now for the point that I want to make. Current and average fuel economy can be displayed in several methods. If I set it for miles per gallon, I show 13.3 current MPG and 14.3 average MPG. If I change peferences to display kilometers per gallon, the numbers become 21.4 current km/gal and 23.0 average km/gal.

So, the question is, are we talking apples and oranges here? Are the Canadian FTE users working in kilometers per gallon, while the FTE users here in the USA are working with miles per gallon? I would think that the gas stations in Canada would dispense fuel measured in liters, not gallons. It is easy to see why this is such a controversial subject.
