1995 Ranger Ex cab 4x4 STX
Can anyone give me a quick lowdown on the 95 STX 4x4?
I am looking at a 4.0l with a 5 sp manual.
Does the STX mean it is a limited slip? What are the possible rear end ratios? Is the 5 speed manual reliable and strong? Is the 4.0 going to last a while if it has been maintained good?
Any info would be great.

STX 4x4 is lifted slightly. You'll have I-beam front end suspension, 8.8" rear differential. Possible gear ratios are 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, all open or limited slip. The 4.0L is a durable engine, and if properly maintained, will have no problems even at 200K. The 5 speed manual has a known leaking problem from the three shift rail plugs at the rear top of the tranny. If it leaks down, kiss the tranny goodbye. Easy fix however. The transfer case, if electronic, is known to stop working if not regularly engaged. The hubs, if automatic, are total peices of crap. With '95 came an interior upgrade, all new dash, larger space inside, etc. Not a bad year at all, can come either EEC-IV or OBD-2, however.
Hope it helps.

My 96 Ranger STX 4WD 4.0L has 114,000 trouble free miles. No transmission leaks or malfunctions. I just replaced the plugs, wires and hoses for the first time since buying it new. It's been a great and reliable truck. I have limited slip and a 3.73 ratio. Mileage has been the weakest point with this truck. I have a 5-speed. 14 MPG city and 18-20 on the highway depending on speed, load and wind. Good luck on your decision.
