Hi there and welcome to FTE.

The computer on your 1992 4.9L L6 controls the advancement of the ignition timing as the RPM's and vacuum change in your motor.

So, to begin timing your truck, you'll want to hook up a timing light to the motor (if it's already running) and setting it at 10* BTDC with any spark advance lines or wires running to the computer disconnected. This is to keep the timing from advancing while you lock in the base, or initial timing.

To do it if the truck isn't running, find TDC on the #1 cylinder. Then, turn the distributor (while it's out of the motor) to where the rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug tower on the cap. Once it's lined up close as you can get it, slip the distributor in and see if you can get it started. If you can, set your base timing and you're good to go.
