86 AOD acting funny??
My wifes Bronco is a 86 302EFI with AOD. We really love the truck but are experiencing a problem. At speeds more than 45 when you let off the gas truck starts what I can explain as compression braking util it slows a bit then will "free wheel" as usual. There is usually a very slight jerk between the compression braking and free wheeling that almost feels like u joint slop. It starts, shifts through the gears and OD perfectly with no slippage. The fluid is bright red with no mal odor. Correct me if wrong but I beleive it to be a vacuum AOD in the 86?? would a leaky modulator cause this symptom? Any ideas?? I am sure a tranny shop will give me the usual "needs rebuild" answer but was hoping for simpler solution.

Mine just started doing the same thing. I also have been experiencing a high idle problem. I was thinking vacuum leak. I was told that the AOD does not use vacuum. I know if you mess with the throttle body stop screw, it will mess up the adjustments and not shift right. I know a good shop I was going to take it to. I'll let you know what I find out.

I had the AOD looked at today by a guy with about 20 years experience with Ford at a tranny shop. He said the idle is too high and that is what is causing the problem. Mine idles at about 1000-1200 in Park and 800 in drive. I am going to work on the high idle tomorrow.

my high idle problem was a bent (1/16") piece of linkage that went between the throttle plates to the linkage on the throttle valve control. It wouldn't allow the throttle plates to close all the way giving a high idle and the symptoms you describe. Once I fixed that the high idle and shifting problems went away.

mine idles at 780 warm. about right. still have the slight jerk but seems be od related. just returned from 1220 mile trip with no worsening of symptoms. really more of a annoyance. probably wait till something breaks rather than chase a ghost. i am going to install zerk fitting on drive line spline for good measure after reading other's posts.
