"86" 4.9 liter automatic or "84" 351 manual
I hope someone can help me out. I am lookiing at buying a Bronco for towing a race car. weight of car and trailer should not be over 4500 pounds. I have two Broncos I am looking at. 1. an 86 with a 4.9 liter straight six with an automatic. 2. an 84 with 351 manual.
Any advice?????
Thanks a lot for your help!!!

You won't be happy with the 4.9 and an automatic when you're *not* towing, never mind pulling 4500 lbs. Although that's a lot of weight for a Bronco regardless of the engine. Check the GCVWR on the B post and make sure you're not exceeding that. If you are, you'll be a lot safer buying a vehicle designed for towing that kind of weight. Sounds like you might need to shop for an F-250.

Yes, buy a 3/4 ton or 1 ton, long wheelbase pickup for towing. Broncos can tow, but I would not buy one specifically as a tow vehicle for a race car and trailer. They would work as a once in a while thing for a car, or to tow a normal sized boat, but not well as a specific race car tow vehicle. Most Broncos have enough trouble getting out of their own way as it is... PS - Try to get a diesel pickup if possible, you will get more torque and better fuel economy.
