Flathead V-8 Engine Colour

I just had an idea to paint my 302 the stock Flathead V-8 colour. I know the 51 truck engines were bronze or green. Would anyone happen to have pictures of these colours?

Dueller my chart shows commercial as being deep red

My chart does not show actual colors just what they were.

Ford Car - Bronze
Mercury Car - Green
Truck - Bronze or Green
Commercial - Red

I'm not painting it red since I hate red. Everyone paints their vehicle red.

It costs big bucks to get the "official" green, but Detroit Diesel Alpine Green, Dupli-Color part number DE1618, is a dead ringer (and a pleasant industrial looking color).

I have a before and after shot of my engine in my gallery. the before shot shows the original color and the after shot is with detroit alpine green. Its pretty darn close and I think that color looks great with black.

Several sellers in Hemmings offer heat resistant engine paint by the quart. It also can be gotten in spray cans. Modern OHV Ford engines didn't go to Ford Blue on all models until 1968.

In the pre 1968 days, the color of the valve colors was the key to what engine the vehicle had. The covers were always painted in a contrasting color.

Mechanics had books showing what color the covers had inre to the engine size.

I stand to be corrected, but I have it on good authority that the "correct" green is Bill Hirsch Lincoln Green 52-?

Bill Hirsch is the seller of the paint, which is also offered by the Kanter Bros, and others. Here at local meets like Pomona, engine paint is sold by locals. It can be mixed by any automotive paint store like Thompson Lacquer.

Apple Green is the correct engine color for trucks 1949/53. 1949/51 Lincoln's used a different shade of green. Lincoln's of this era use the 337 V8 flathead engine, transmissions were overdrive or Hydramatic.

In 1966 weren`t all Ford V 8`s blue?
My 65 Mustang`s 289 is black with that funky off gold valve covers & air cleaner, that sorta bites as I would prefer the all blue clolor instead.
Any idea of what the gold color code/shade is?

I'm not really keen on the light green. I don't think it would go with all the factory aluminum parts. Ford blue doesn't go with my color theme. Does anyone have a picture of the Bronze color?

Nope, Black 1960/1967 on trucks. Black 1960/1967 on cars. 1954/57's were Red on Ford cars. Yucky Green on Mercs, with contrasting valve covers which denote engine size.

Funky gold valve covers: 1961/64 Galaxie = 352. 1965/66 Mustang/Falcon/Fairlane = 289; Trucks = 352.

Most ppl today don't know about different engine/valve covers colors on OHV engines and paint them all blue. Heresy!

Yes, but it's a bit hard to show you. I'm still fighting with the FTE avatar/gallery, if I resize the photos any more I won't be able to see them.

It's a medium bronze, not dark. 1949/51 passenger cars were bronze, I believe.

No "Ford Blue" was used till 1968.

And, btw...the "coveted" Blue Oval Ford exterior emblems disappeared in 1949 on cars (not sure on trucks), and didn't resurface on cars till 1981 (1983 on trucks).

Nathan The Bronze color is real close to the Cummins engine paint. That is what George Moir used on his 48 Mercury M-47

I've been told too, by a restorer with several Dearborn awards to his name, that 52 Lincoln engine green is the right color. Since you are working on a 51, lets s</SCRIPT>ee if I can post this picture of a bronze 51 engine. That didn't work. I'll try again. I'm not having any luck. This picture is in my gallery if you want to see it. Stu
