My 54 came from South Africa
8 years ago it cost about £2000 but was not nearly as nice as this one
I would say if you can get that truck for $8500 you have a bargain but the market will be different in SA.
If it was in the UK it would easily make twice that
The tailgate on my truck looks like yours, I had thought that it may have been modified during its lifetime but seeing this truck makes me think they may have been built that way
Good luck with your purchase

Welcome to the board! Its always fun to hear from folks from different corners of the world.
Ok, here's my 2 cents. the truck looks pretty solid, I would definately look it over carefully for bondo in the noted areas. If its bondo free I think the asking prices is fair. Of course you should try and talk him down a bit, just because. Heck, I think its probably against the rules to buy and old truck without haggling over the price....lol
Keep us posted if you buy it. I'd like to see some different pictures of those tailgate handles also. I've never seen them before either and they look interesting.
Good luck
Bobby

Check out this web site, under the "classic cars" section. This assumes a US truck, but it will give you a ball-park idea of what this truck could sell for. It looks really clean to me, and in Southern California at least, $8,500 would be a bargain. Good luck.

Even with some bondo I think it's a pretty decent deal. Good deals don't stick around. Grap it now if you can.
I suspect that tailgate option may have been unique to South Africa but I like it a lot bette than the chain/hook set-up we get tuck with here. PErhpas they were figuring that all that Safari driving would tear up the tailgates and developed this option. If you buy the tyruck, I would really be interested in getting a better look at the tailgate and tailgate latch set-up. I suspect I'm not alone. For a semi-purist, you could rationalize doing something like this to one of our trucks since it would technically be a stock set-up, just happpens to be that it was stock in Africa.
