catalytic converters
ii have a 99 f150 4.6L, 4x4 w/128,000 mi.. have a chattering sound coming from my catalytic converters..does this mean that they are going bad??? i also noticed on the joint between the muffler and the converters of a leak where water leaks out....could this harm the idle of the vehicle?

The chatter is usually a loose heat shield. A plugged converter will give you poor performance due to the engine being unable to breath. Similar to when a person is constipated.
The joint between the cat and the muffler is a very thin one. My truck does it also and if you replace the muffler clamp. when you install the new one, make sure you have the clamp over both pipes - otherwise you will collapse or begin bending the metal on the one.

What is the usual life expectancy of a catalytic converter...because my truck does seem like it is constipated, so to say.....is there anyway that i can check them?

A cat's life can very a lot. Some last 50,000 others go 200,000 with no problems. Having someone look at may be the next step. Is it throwing any codes?
When a cat fails there is a reason. That reason must be addressed or the new cat will face the same fate.
