Wish I could help more. I did it on my '82 150 many years ago, but don't have an accurate memory of the job. I know the 2 trucks have different sized axles, but I think the job should be similar in principle.
All I can remember is I did it in a few hours and I dont recall any special tools.
I know this isn't much help-someone on here will have done it and can give you some pointers.
It is a b***h getting old and getting fuzzy memories!

Which axle? If it's the rear , is it a F250HD or LD ? 97 has both.
If it's a HD, you will need a special socket that can be bought at most auto parts stores & even borrowed at some. Job isn't bad,
