Unhappy Gages peg at start up, weird noise.

I have a '99 f150 5.4ltre. Latley I've noticed that when I start the vehicle on a very cold day my instrument panel gages peg then return. Tach. speedometer, all gages peg. Is this an issue I should worry about?
The truck also makes anoise when you first start it but only when it is very cold outside. It sounds something like the starter staying engaged for a second or so.

Guages pegging like that are a sure sign of a battery on its way south. Replace the battery.

That would make sense why it does it only when it's cold.

Thanks a lot.

My 2001 4.6 has made a nasty weird noise occasionally when starting since new (130,000 miles ago). Although I've always felt I should do something, I've never gotten around to it.

I assume the starter gear sometimes doesn't engage the flywheel teeth. It has not gotten worse and has caused no other problems.

since you mentioned about the battery, i remember that my dads f-150 did that when i turned the key on, and soon after it would turn over slowly, replaced the battery and never did it again
