what engines came in a 59?
was at the shop today and i saw a very nice 59 ford truck. guy has had it in there for the past 16 months getting a complete frame off from what the mechanic said. when i looked under the hood i couldnt figure out what engine it was. it was a v8, i think maybe an fe? it had only 2 bolts for the valve covers and there were in the center like some of the newer chevy ones, and the exhaust manifold came from the right engine bank over the front of the engine to the pass side where it connected and then went down and out like normal. what was tthat all about???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Aug-02 AT 06:28 PM (EST)]The exhaust makes me pretty sure it's a standard Ford 1954-1964 Y-block V-8. The Y-blocks were available in 239, 256, 272, 282, and 312 CID versions although only the 292 CID was available in 1959 according to John Mummert's http://www.ford-y-block.com. The two bolts per valve cover also matches the Y-block and the Y-block bolts are in the middle of the valve cover, not around the edges. The Y-block would have been a standard engine for that year.

That should have been a 292 in one of two HP ratings - it is one of the Y block family of engines just before the FE series. It replaced the 272 which looked the same.
The exhaust crossover pipe? Just the way Ford chose to run the pipes on some applications. Very distinctive looking.
