wondering if 4/5 speed transmissions from ranger/bronco II's will bolt up without severe modification to a 2.3L 4cyl out of a '78 mustang II. also will the 5 speed out of a 2.9L equipped bronco II/ranger bolt up to the 2.3 4cyl? thanks--TY

No, and kind of.

The trans from a 2.9L has a different bolt pattern than the 2.3L. However, you can take the FM146 from a Ranger/BII and swap the bell housing to a 2.3L housing and it will work. Of course there are other things to consider, like mounts and the different length drive shafts. So do the homework before you try. The other question is "why?".

 

The 2.3L is out of a mustang II and currently in a 52 ****** jeep. It is bolted to the jeep's original three speed tranny, so we want to upgrade to a 4 or 5 speed manual. Mounts and driveshaft lengths are not really a problem as they will have to be fabricated anyway. Thanks for the reply

Just find a T5 out of a 4 banger Mustang. It'll bolt right up.
