272 conversion

Hello,

I posted this over on the 61 - 66 forum also, but since I am using parts from a the 53 - 56 trucks, I was hoping that I could get some help here, too.

I have just purchased a 61 F100 with a 223-six and a 3spd still on the column. All the way home (about a 3 hr trip, Louisville to Nashville) I kept thinking about how I was going to have to do something about the gearing of the truck. Then, as i was entering the Nashville area, I lost oil pressure and was just able to limp it in for a landing in my driveway. I have a complete, running 272 Y-block out of a 56 truck and a manual 3spd OD out of a 54 truck in my garage left over from other projects. My questions are:

Is the 272 swap going to be an easy one?

What mods do I have to consider? Will the motor mounts for the 272 fit with the existing cross members, or will some fab work have to be done?

Will the bell housing from the 272 fit the 3spd OD tranny?

Are the input shaft length and splines correct for the 272?

Any input from your knowledge and/or experience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff Moore

If the 272 bell housing is from a truck and the 3 spd OD is from a truck they will bolt together and work. The truck trans has a longer input shaft than the car version to match up with the bell housing.

Does the 6 cyl engine bell housing have side mounts like the V8? If it does the 272 should bolt in place. You may need to find a Y block V8 front mount if you don't have one.

I'd agree with Roger. The engine and trans will bolt right up. And the only part you'll have to look for is the front motor mount.
